The early 5.7's were never designed for anything more then what they did and as soon as they started going over 400 hp the cylinders would not stay round. That's part of the reason SRT came out with the 6.1's so they could design in reinforcements inside the casting to increase the structural integrity that was needed for the increase in horsepower.

I don't know about that, the early 5.7's (03-05) are supposed to be the beefiest of the early blocks and plenty of them well over 600 HP and I've never heard of a cylinder wall distortion issue, especially at 400 HP, which is pretty low. As a matter of fact the 5.7 is supposed to have beefier cylinder walls than a 6.1 as a general rule. The 6.1 was designed on its own merit and not because of a "problem" with the 5.7, I'd even guess the 6.1 was designed almost side by side with the 5.7 at the onset of Gen III HEMI design (2000 ish?)

Actually the block was ready for 2002 production in trucks, but Mercedes having just acquired Chrysler, did not like the fact that the block did not have MDS provisions, and didn't want two different blocks. The redesign is what delayed the 5.7 until 2003, and why the 5.9 Magnum was used instead. My understanding is that SRT group designed the 6.1 to their specs. SRT and Mopar Performance are separate groups that didn't (maybe still don't) play well together. MP wanted to release the 6.1 as a crate motor, but SRT wasn't having it. MP then stroked a 5.7 and offered it carb'd or injected, if I remember something over 500 HP. This started a [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] storm between SRT and MP. As you can see, 6.1 blocks will be available now that SRT is done with them. 6.2 and SRT 6.4's are available now, but only as short blocks in the 4K range.

The 392/540hp crate were 6.1 based with 3.79 cranks.

I don't think so. BES ran a 5.7 with stock bolts and caps. 700hp

I wouldn't mind buying a 6.2 short block. Would be a great foundation for a turbo motor.

Anybody have a part number for one or a link?

Yes, I meant before the release. The 5.7 stroker made almost 600 HP. SRT and MP then got together on the 6.1.

I was still a dealer tech at the time but got to go to the Mothership at Sterling Heights on several occasions and talk with the engineers. Not sure how much is true, but was told roughly the same from a few different engineers.

Part number is 68262362AA. They have it on STAR restriction for QC. You'll need a VIN from a Hellcat and request the part based on other than warranty issue, i.e. hydro-lock from water crossing, etc...

The information on the early 5.7 blocks going out of round over 400 hp and creating the reason for the development of the 6.1's came directly from one of the SRT engineers.

Typically the cylinders will crack under higher hp. Have seen some crack at 750 and some live past 1200hp, fairly dependent on tune.

I wouldnt be so quick to write off the vvt's. High horse performance just posted a dyno graph of a 5.7 with comp cams 274 , cam phaser and full exhaust making 442 hp and 413ftlbs at the wheel.

They did, about 2 years ago. VVT's are just as good as any older Gen III just more $$$$ and headache for the average hot rodder to use with whats currently available. The one thing about them is if you score one, the worst head it would have is the Eagle which is as good as a W5.

Maybe so, but history says otherwise, PLENTY of 5.7's over 400 HP (well over) with no issues

The dealer I ordered it from received the notice or information. He received it from Chrysler.

Does anyone know if these blocks are finish machined? Cam bearings installed? If so, I think I am in for a few! Where are you guys ordering from??? I just got my Apache heads today, so the flame has been lit again!

Matthew
My understanding is that they are fully machined

I'm thinking that they (Fiat) is probably waiting to see how many orders to fill before the production starts?

At the price that they were quoting they will sell a bunch. IMO
