I have a 2004 and absolutely love it.

They changed the body/engines in 2005 so I would make sure and get 2004 or earlier.

Avoid the 4.7 and get the 4.0 inline 6 cylinder. They last forever and are reasonably good on gas.

Have had friends with 300,000+ miles on them and just normal wear items replaced. Most do have hydraulic lifter noise when you start them up and will tick for a little bit but don't let that scare you off. After a few regular oil changes with synthetic oil mine has gotten progressively better and only does it when its really cold at first startup. It's just a sticky lifter.

Good seating position and comfortable seats up front).

2004 and older have blend door issues even on the basic system. Not a problem if you like permanent defrost default.

Looked at a few pre 04's. My friend does not like the 4.0L. A bit underpowered and sounds like "old machinery".

This openned the door to 05's and up with a 5.7L in the gunsights for tomorrow.

What do you know about the next generation Grand Cherokee?

Mines a '98. Yes, a little older than your preferences. But I chimed in to say the 4.0 straight six is a very reliable, long lasting engine (as long as you maintain it. Change oil regularly!). I've got 176,000 miles on mine. Things to watch out for: Rear end axle bearings, computer, heater/ A/C drain, and trans.
Good luck.

I like the looks, but there is NO WAY I'd consider one unless it happened to be from an older person. If it had regular use from someone under the age of say 35, that car will have been thrashed (most likely). Our Craigslist is FULL of Dodge/Jeep hemi powered vehicles with blown engines, crooked frames, etc.

Just be aware when you are looking to remember that the temptation to use the loud pedal is VERY hard to resist if there is a hemi badge on it...

He pulled the trigger on an 05 5.7L Limited. Originally 7900, 7300 and he offered 6300. Cert and e tested.

He made them service the trans because he thought it had no 5th gear but it seems to need about 100km/hr to get top gear.

Drove super tight. Power was good, not as strong as 09 Hemi's. Took it off road into the snow and it climbed snow covered hills like a mountain goat. The quadra trac II seems very impressive.

Power adj pedals not working but everything else perfect. Seems like a low 15 sec machine
