I just finished putting a "good" 727 in my 70 383 Barracuda, I adjusted the linkages as per the service manual (and have done with total success in the past) Before I took the car off the jackstands I filled the trans (type F) & ran it in neutral for a bit then through the gears to make sure the oil was through everywhere before I re-checked the level & 2nd is not good.

First gear seems fine but it's almost like it wants to lock something up when it tries to change into second, sounds like something is loading up so I didn't push it.

I checked the kickdown band adjustment & it was fine as per the book.

I can't send the trans back as I bought it in the US & shipped it here to New Zealand.

Where to from here?

Could be the low reverse band is too tight or hanging up. sometimes the servo cocks in it's bore causing it to stick applied. you may have to pull the pan and have a look.

It can burn the low reverse band and drum real quick if it is any of the above two things.

Some shift kits will do that if they are the wrong one? Does it shift OK if you leave it in auto or does it do it on manual shift or all the time??

Thanks, I'll pull the pan this morning & check the servo & the adjustment of the low reverse band. It loads up in second if it's in second or drive once it has enough revs to change up from first, Cheers

On jackstands it's perfectly normal for the rear wheel to almost stop on a manual 1-2 upshift.

Jackstands is the absolute worst place to test the operation of an automatic transmission.

I pulled the pan & checked the low reverse band & it felt too tight so I adjusted it as per the book & things are much better to this point so heading out for a road test now.

I hear what all you guys are saying about jack stands & thanks for the advise.

Took it for a drive, all seems OK now but the road was wet so I couldn't get into yet. Cheers for the help.
