ok I am still trying to get a light to my radio and am told the socket with the black and orange wire is not the radio light (not sure where that goes, maybe the ashtray). Should there be an extra orange wire off the radio power plug for the light and maybe it got cut off?

As you are looking at the radio, I believe there should be an Orange single wire that enters the right side of the radio towards the front on that side and routes to the rear of the radio for the radio light.

the problem is that there is only the wires with the plug end for the power to the radio there is no other wire there for the light. If I need to route a wire for the light where would I bring it from?

OK, I will try and make this as simple as I can.
In this pic below, we have an E body AM radio. The
orange wire coming from the side of the case is the light. The red wire is the power going to the radio. They meet and are both in the same grey plug . Under your dash, somewhere near the radio, you should see the other end of this plug, which will feed the power AND light . Just plug it in .
As long as nobody has hacked up your under dash harness, you should see the other end of the radio plug very close to the radio .

This may help also. Below is a close up of both plugs. The one on the right is what is on your radio. The one on the left is what should be hanging under your dash. I have a couple different
ones pictured to show different possible color combos of the wires.
