My guess is A the ball joints are stripped, B the car has aftermarket a arms' or C there are people selling new a arms complete with bushings and ball joints on eBay. Maybe we will get the answer soon.

From my experience if the ball joint will unscrew they are fine. The problem I have seen are radius rods that are bent and worn out pivots on the lower arm.

I've never had an issue with rebuilding the original upper arms.. (As you said, unless the ball joint threads were chewed up I could see replacing them with another old set.) I rather rebuilt some old arms, versus the new oe style, would-have-to-come-from-china-I-guess ones.

I am about to rebuild the front suspension on my 68 charger and am trying to find upper control arms. I want to go with OEM stle. Any suggestions on what brand to buy and where? Thanks.
I know you said OEM style...But IMO you would be very happy with Firm Feel upper control arms because of the added positive caster that they provide. That's my recommendation. I will never put a OEM arm back on ever again after running FF arms.

Lucky you, sometimes you get a problem child where the ball joint won't tighten up. You can spot weld them in but it will be the last time.

Never had a problem with one
Maybe it's the rust?

Mancini sells these reproduction factory uppers with everything you need for $180: http://www.manciniracing.com/mbmupcoarmse.html
rock auto has them for $142: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=5490240&cc=1078826
If you do it yourself, you need to buy the tool to remove the upper ball joint and I think you need a tool to remove the upper control arm (UCA) bushings. Then you need new ball joints ($20x2) and new UCA bushings ($25x2 if offset bushings), new eccentric bolts, and I think that's it. If I'm missing something or have the moog offset bushings wrong, someone will hopefully correct me.
Me, I bought these jammy-jams: http://www.manciniracing.com/bebofuadupco.html They provide more adjustments than I will ever need.
Great info, this is why I bought aftermarket. Once you add up the cost of the parts & tools and labor (I don't have press), it's a wash.
