I have a 67 GTX with a points style voltage regulator that has started sticking intermittently when the battery has reached full charge and there is no load on the system. If you turn on the headlights and load the system it works fine. I have used paper to clean the points and that helps for awhile.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to better clean the points?

I really do not want to put an electronic voltage regulator on the car as they do not really look correct, but I have a date coded one I can use if I have to.

paper as in notebook paper or sandpaper? I'd think you'd need emery cloth/shot of brake kleen then maybe run thru the OE procedure in the shop manual for adjusting the voltage setting. mrrandyj at aol dot com sells an electronic one that has a cover that looks like the OE mechanical you now have for $29 to your door & iirc there is a parts house brand which will accept the OE mech cover off of your current one. When they act up they are problematic & as you know you dont want to chance it full fielding . I would not run it till you deal with it

The replacemt type will look and hook up hjust like OE.Unless you have a 100 point rest show poodle.use one.You can also get them with the factory looking type can instead of the low type or put the OE cover over it.Rocky

It was notebook paper and it cleaned them up pretty well and lasted for about a year. I think emery paper with non metallic abrasive would be my next try and then do the OE voltage adjustment. I have 1 follow on questions.

1. Do you happen to know which parts house brand will accept the stock cover?

I have a date coded electronic replacement from Year One, but I would really prefer to use the mechanical one with the stock cover if possible as the one from Year One is not really correct.

I wouldn't use brake cleaner, might melt the varnish on the windings. Use contact cleaner instead. Using emery cloth, fold it over so that you can do both contacts at once, while they are closed. This will help keep you from sanding in a high spot on one of the contacts. If they are especially nasty you can try a points file. Or replace the unit. As RR said, adjust the regulator while you are there.

I put in a stock points style regulator with electronic guts. They are readily available and mine works great. Like the hidden HEI, I did this so the wiring and firewall would look stock.

Do you guys have a part number for the electronic version? I would like to get one for my car but don't want to get a points one by mistake, and when I look them up it didnt specify points or electronic ignition version.

wells VR706 or lookup the eBay one talked about in the nearby "overcharging" thread. I believe most sold these days are electronic. an electromechanical (OE type) unit (that you dont want) will have wire wound resistors visible on the bottom side
