What story do these plugs tell you? They are from two ten minute drives with a fresh motor- the cam was just broken in and I'm thinking the rings might not be seated yet. I do know that I forgot to get new gas and I was still burning up 7 month old gas that may or may not have had sta-bil put in it (oops!). Also the carb is not tuned but should be close-ish or maybe lean its from my last 408 and now sits on a victor 340 and ported edelbrocks instead of an air-gap and stock e heads.

My thinking is either misfires on the clean ones or rings not seated yet and oil fouling the darker plugs. The heat range looks right on the straps and the rings all seem to say rich. Fuel distribution? It's a victor 340 intake.

Here ya go:

And a closeup/straight on view of #2 & #4

And a detail of #5 & #3

By the way Im not looking for a lean/fat evaluation- I am more curious about how some plugs are way cleaner

Normally aspirated engines just do that due to differences in wet air flow. EGT's can vary a lot across a carbureted motor, up to 100* or more on a few that I have worked on. Sequential EFI is one of the few ways that helps eliminate the difference because it balances out each cylinder based on how it is firing. Tim

That sounds cool and all but he has issues and the carbs I fix don`t look that way. #1, make sure it`s sealed up, properly tuned w/fresh gas...........I take nothing for granted anymore and check everything 2-3 times..........

Trying to read plugs under a "cruise" situation is pretty much a waste of time. Distribution, reversion and all sorts of other things happen during cruise, making what the plugs "LOOK" like pretty meaningless. Only thing to be really concerned about is a "WET" plug. Then is it wet with fuel or oil. If wet with fuel, a potential ignition or carb issue. If wet with oil, ring seal or oil entering somewhere else. Wet with fuel goes away once the plug is exposed to atmosphere and gas evaporates. Oil doesn't go away..........is how you tell which is which

I hear ya Monte and my point was on a new build before I start tuning I makes sure the motor`s fairly sound because as we all know, carbs get blamed when they have no influence at all on an unhappy motor. And w/the 2-circuit tunes, you CAN read the cruise on the plug........

Can`t they`re too jacked but you can read idle cruise and wfo on a plug problem is you mostly work on full blown race cars which have different needs especially the nos guys idling around w/cold ass plugs.

Get rid of the old fuel and install a new set of plugs...
the old fuel CAN be down low enough(RVP, reed vapor pressure)
that only in the hotter cyls its firing... what your
looking at now is a waste of time

Fuel distribution would be my first guess.

what Auto lite plug #, what ignition system? what wire set, last set I saw that looked like that had real bad ign wires shorting all over the top of the engine, run the engine at night and look for the spark show...

Bingo! Fuel distribution, my Victor 340 does it at cruise.

Thanks for the responses fellas.

I've been having trouble getting time to work on the car but before I try to tune on it any more I'm getting some fresh gas. New wires plugs and coil are already installed to rule out those being problems. I also detailed my pro billet distributor- those suckers sure like to oxidize! Im running an analog 6al brain- in my experience they either work or not so if it runs I'm not looking there for trouble.

The plugs were autolite 3924. I couldn't find champs the day I swapped them last. I've heard champs are junk but I never had one break apart and I've been running rc12yc and rn12yc plugs in my mopars and harleys for years. I also like ngk b8es in my harley but haven't had any for a while. The silver colored champs are easier to read for me.

I think a reasonable street tune shouldn't be far away. I just have to lean out the idle circuit enough to cruise clean and get wot where it doesn't knock or blow black smoke and the fine tuning can wait till my wideband is up and running again. The dreaded innovate Error 8 was not fixed with replacement bosch sensor so I have to check my grounds again before I set it on fire and get a different setup.
