I have read and seen pics of the 273 rocker shafts with dual holes one in the bottom and one in the side or just one in the side about 90 degrees from the mounting holes for oiling. The shafts I have only have a hole in the bottom and I was wondering if the hole in the side was for oil to get to the ball port easier.

Correct, not sayin it is OE (sounds like it is tho) but that is the intent (for that location)
