Anybody ever had much experience with the SMEC, brain box, on the 1989 dodge trucks? I have had the truck for years, it only gets driven sparingly at best but somehow she just keeps going and going. My 89 is the TPI fuel inj and a 4 speed. Last month she wouldn't start. she spins but no fuel nor spark. If I hot wire the fuel pump at the auto shutdown relay the pump works fine but still no start, I tested that relay as the book says and all checked out fine. So on to the no spark issue? Best I can tell the brain box tells the ignition when to turn on. So I figure lets try a new brain since it also tells the auto shutdown when and when not to work, I think anyways, I looked up online after hours to find what a process it would be to get a new one and found oriellys offers a bunch of rebuilt boxes. But the "OE #" they list with their options doesn't match mine at all. not even close, my box shows 4638251. 89 dodge half ton 360 TPI 4speed manual. oriellys has a couple boxes for that application but the numbers don't match. I assume the tunes will be different, so I hate to buy the wrong box, which I also assume will not be returnable once plugged in? any ideas on which way to proceed from here??? I'll try dodge in the am, but can already here the parts guy whining about my antique truck...........

my 1990 had the same issue with no spark, didn't
have time to chase the problem, so I had a shop
check it out. My was a part in the distributor.

How about trying to locate a used one from a wrecking yard etc. I would think an auto trans sbec would work to see if it would help to get it running. You've got tbi by the way.

Been a while so bear with me .

When you turn the key on does the ASD and/or Fuel pump relay click on then back off? It should

But,,,,,Those trucks were notorius for dist pickup plates.

Sometimes if you just pull the coil lead back out of the dist cap just enough to ck for spark will create enough resistance to get the pickup to work ,,for a while.

Or,,,Tap on the side of the dist hsg ( lightly) sometimes that works.

Back then ECM problems were extremly rare
