Are the sway bar brackets for '72 roadrunner supposed to look like this or should they be more "U" shaped?

Those are bent. Feet should be flat & the sides parallel.

Mine look like the first pic. I pulled them from the j/y and left them like that for the install. I assumed they were made that way. Guess I was wrong.
