Would it work if I used a gasket instead of buytl?
Ummm, are you trying to install this without a rubber gasket? If so, then yes the glass is going to fall right through the opening. You have to use an original type rubber gasket. They buytl strip is used to make sure the gasket seals well to the opening and the glass. It's not meant to replace the actual gasket

That is strange, because the glass that was in the 67, which I really wish I had not broken, was installed with buytl tape. No gasket. 1/2" overlap on the pinch weld all the way around.
if the glass was/is as you say , its the wrong glass. The same glass fits from 67 to 76. Only difference is the 67 car did not have chrome trim around the glass but a plastic insert in the rubber . But the glass is the same .
