I am in the early stages of planning a 512 stroker motor and I am having trouble finding a reputable machine shop that specializes in, or regularly works on Mopar engines. I am in Southwestern Ontario, but if anyone could recommend places within Ontario to deal with, I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks guys!

Any quality shop can work on your Mopar motor. Nothing about them requires it to be a MOPAR shop to build it.

Lots of Mopar people think theres some black magic to Mopars, there isn't. You just need someone who does quality work.

That's a very fair point and I respect it.

I didn't mean to insinuate that a good machinist could not do the required work, but I would like to deal with someone who favors Mopars (a) because I would like to support such an individual with my business and (b) I feel such a person may/should know the specific parts better, or have greater experience with them to help steer me in the correct direction.

Thanks for the replies.

Building an engine, in ANY brand is the same. The selection of parts is also the same depending on the intent of the engine and the desired power level. To make a certain amount of power, you need a certain quality of parts and a certain amount of air flow. Parameters easily come up with by a competent builder.

Now I will say this............there is a guy in the Ontario area that runs an engine shop and he either currently, or WAS the crew chief/engine builder on an A/Fuel dragster. That's about as Mopar as you get, but I doubt very seriously his shop is known as a Mopar shop. I recently had a BBC apart that he built and the machine work was simply beautiful.

I totally agree with Andy FHO is really personable and knows his $hit! I had a 572 world block built by him and I'm VERY happy with there work!

Hewitt Automotive Machine in Brockville Ont.

A bit of a haul for you but worth it. He does it all except cranks in house. A non denominational shop, he has built engines you've never heard of. Everything from single cylinder St Lawrence engines to Packard 4M 2500 V12's and everything in between.

If it isn't dead nuts it doesn't go out the door.

picking someone that specializes in mopars does make a difference.....they have more of their heart put into the build not just a paycheck.heck 3/4 of machine shops around here dont even have torque plates for mopar LOL.ive traveled to the US to have my last motor built and would do it again in a heartbeat alot of underachievers ive seen come out around here.Jesse Robinson aka RAMM would be my choice staying on this side of the boarder.he is a member here 613 931 2157 is his shop number.call around and do some inquiring make sure at the very least they have torque plates or dont bother.

This is Canada. We have 10% of the population that the US has. Given that there are probably only 10 Mopar specialty shops in the entire US, an even ratio would give us ONE in Canada. An that's probably Tim Banning who is backed up a year with hemis.

That said, there are plenty of shops around with the skills to machine and assemble a motor. But you need to do SOME research on your own as to what goes in that motor.

Not only is this the way I feel but there are other obvious advantages to dealing with a Mopar oriented shop. I am a Mopar guy, I have small block and big block torque plates that I made here. I will have a G3 soon. I also have lots of other specialized Mopar specific tooling and procedures. I am the only machinist I know of that bolts an oil pump to the rear main of a SBM for example. These are but a few examples. J.Rob

Personally I think that's crap. A QUALITY machine shop, puts their best effort forward regardless of the brand of engine, because WHAT MATTERS is their name is on the valve cover and hence their reputation.

I used to work in an engine shop that was voted IHRA engine builder of the year several times. Translated, that means we did great work and made good power. We took pride in EVERY engine we pushed out the door being right and the best it could be. We primarily did Chevy's, but also did lots of Fords and Mopars as well. An engine is an air pump, no more, no less. Making power is making power and the brand on the valve cover is irrelevant..............Now sure, a MOPAR specialty shop per say, may have a few more little cool tools that are Mopar specific, but that does NOT mean they are any better. It only means they have tools to speed the process involved with an engine they do a lot of. Does not mean other shops don't do the same work.

Now I do agree with the shop you choose should have the torque plate for your motor, or at least willing to buy it. I recently had a 360 block line honed by a local shop. The owner used to run the engine shop for a well known Pro-Stock team and they do Pro-Stock quality work. When I mentioned line honing the 360, he said he had never done one of those and would have to buy the rings from BHJ. So did him NOT having the rings mean he was not capable of the work......HELL NO, it simply meant he didn't have THOSE rings.......he DID have 340 rings by the way

It was mentioned above about bolting an oil pump on a SBM while honing it, either the bores or the line hone......Well yeah, that's a given on ANY engine that the pump mounts on a main cap, Mopar, Ford, or Chevy. Solid machine practices apply to all engines.

And lastly, just because somebody IS specialized, sure don't automatically qualify them as good. I can think of a couple pretty well known "Mopar" shops, that I wouldn't let work on my lawnmower engine...........too many people drinking the "koolaid" these days

These comments in no way shape or form reflect on Tim Banning or RAMM engines. We ALL know they do great work and are excellent choices. My comments are geared toward the fact that many think a Mopar HAS to be built by a MOPAR shop

The other option is to find a good shop and make them a Mopar shop by sending them enough business. That is what I did with the shop that I use here in Oregon. I've run enough engines thru there that over the years they have become Mopar experts. We worked together to build bore plates, dyno headers, dyno brackets, etc. Now they are set up to run SB, BB and Hemi engines. They were a very good race shop before I started working with them but they didn't have all of the Mopar specific tools.
