Hi Mopar fans and experts!

A '72 Satellite pro touring project has just landed in my lonely garage. I hope that someone on Moparts knows if an A518 overdrive trani will fit without modifying the trani tunnel.

I don't have any pics available yet due to technical issues, but I'd like to eventually start a build thread in the proper section. The previous owner mini-tubbed it and installed a 9'' ford rear with disc brakes. I already have a 360 six pack engine, which will reside under a Mopar shaker hood scoop. That scoop looks amazing with the Satellite's rounded body style. The wheels will be from Show Wheels. The "Streeter" 20's & 18's. They are a 5 spoke design... black with a machined lip. I'd like to paint the car Curious Yellow with custom formed black "Reverse C" stripes, like on a 1970 Super Bee.

Anyway, That's my story, and first question. Thanks, Steve

It gains size at the back of the case where the extension housing bolts up plus the mass of the od/extension housing. The length of the main case is the same as the 727 but you will need to do some work on the t-bar crossmember where it loops over the trans plus modify the trans crossmember and mount. Also you need to get a driveshaft cut down. Is the car floor shift? If so, shifter modification too for the mounting to the trans. Cooler lines are larger too. Is it an RH or RE trans? RH is 95 back and can be operated by simple switches for the od and lockup. RE, 96 on, must have a trans controler to operate it.

Ahhh... I will retain the column shifter, and I don't have a drive shaft yet, so I'll have one made to fit. I can modify the trani mount. I found a local trani shop who will take my 727 as a core, and provide a rebuilt pre-1995 A518, complete with the pressure switch conversion kit, a shift kit, and a 2 year warrantee. The price is $1500. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Thanks for the info!

Very good read here,

http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=84774.0

I'm actually just getting ready to do my 1st test drive today, been working on this on & off for a couple of months. Definitely a lot of little obstacles to overcome, every install is a little different.

$1500 is a good deal, I picked up a 518 at JY for $200, then another $1000 for a rebuild.

I like the custom cross member that he fabricated. Sure would love to get my hands on that template. What did you do for your cross member replacement???

Oh, and what rear end ratio are you running?

You will have to cut the middle of the torsion bar crossmember for clearance and bend a thicker piece of metal to take the place. If you grind down a couple rubs on the trans I've seen pics on the internet showing it will fit with no other floor mods.

I think if you don't modify the floors you'll loose ground clearance because the transmission ends up lower in the car. At least this was the case in my A-body Dart.
Especially given the deeper oilpan. That's something you don't really want on a lowered pro-touring car.

I removed the center section of the upper cross member and replaced it with 1/4" X 2 1/2" plate formed to the floor plate to get the clearance needed to fit the 518 in my Dart Sport. This was a swap from a 904 and the floor plate was not cut just one small section had to be hammered up for clearance.

This will help you set the drive line geometry correctly.

Well, the modifications required for this swap do not sound extremely difficult, so the effort should be worth the gains.
I don't have the A518 in hand, but now I want to go forward with my plans after reading all the great replies, because I can't go forward without a transmission. I hope that a B-body has more room in the cross member area above the trani tail shaft than an A-body.

Thanks everyone!

I believe my 74 Road Runner had more trans tunnel clearance than most A bodies I've looked at.

There was a post by 1_wild_rt a number of years ago detailing this swap into his challenger. He did it by doing the crossmember mod and trimming some ribs on the 518 case. No other floor cutting. And since the E body and 71-74 B body share the same tunnel.... They have more room down there than the rest of the mopars from that era.

Hi Mike! Great to hear from you! We gotta get together at Dade City sometime soon! Yep... I couldn't pass on buying this cool car! I'm still driving the Step side, and I guess my Super bee will be stepping aside until I finish building the Satellite. (sigh) My truck is runnin' great, but it needs a V8! However, I'm stealing it's future 360 six pack engine to put in the Satellite!

I'll again try to download some pictures for everyone. My computer is outsmarting me! (ugh!)
