How do they check the thickness and material for a race car cage? We have 1 pulling club in Quebec that is going to start checking cages. There are to option for mild steel and chromoly. I believe they are going to use a sonic checker. Can they determine material this way or just thickness?
Thanks

Just thickness with the sonic tester. They do have ways (usually chemical) to check the type of steel.

If it's like our local NHRA guys, they took my word for it.

Chromoly is stenciled from the steel mill so if it's not painted or coated they can see it's Moly.

Ok thanks. In our sport near all chassis are painted due to the enviorment we pull in.

Generally speaking the moly tubing is available in different thicknesses than you would see with mild steel. If the chassis inspector is familiar with the common mild and moly wall thicknesses they'll probably know what they're looking at.

I believe the common thickness for chromoly is: .083 and .120 is common for mild steel.
Common for roll bar tubing, that is.

The spec is .095 1.75 chromoly which I can buy in mild steel. Even though that is the spec I havent found that in chromoly.

.095 x 1.75 CM is pretty stout stuff. I haven't fooled with any but I expect it would take a decent bender to bend that. AED in Indianapolis has tubing that size. No idea what it would take to get it to you. I hope your guys know how to calibrate the sonic testers correctly. Apparently when they started using them to check bars here, they didn't. Created a lot of problems later on when they learned how to do it right. I know of more than one car that had passed a couple of times and then all of a sudden wasn't legal.

I bought some moly from onlinemetals.com and I believe they have the .095 x 1.75 tubing.

Also be on the lookout for fake CM, there was a bunch imported from China that did not meet spec even though it was labeled 4130 normalized...Tim

Bill that is exactly why we are changing the cage on this tractor. It has to meet the SFI 47.3 spec which is 1.75 .095 chromoly or 1.875 .083 mild which is over kill for the class because this spec is for ntpa 2000 hp minis. the club requesting this does not allow that class of tractor. It is like putting 8.90 cage in a twelve second car. The 2 choices seem out of wack to me be I haven't looked up how the 2 choices compare to each other.

It's in Chinese?

Or its wrapped like chopsticks?

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Stay away from the Chinese stuff. You get what you pay for. Always ask where is it made.

Problem is you need to buy both cert books to get the details...but cheaper in the long run vs wasting time and tube

1.75 is as common as it gets. Any chassis shop will have dies to bend that as long as the machine will do it. I have no idea where you would get 1.875 bent. Not a chassis shop that I know of.

What my buddy did was went with 2 inch .083 wall and that satisfied the sfi spec.

Ask for made in the USA certification paperwork, any reputable supplier will provide it for a small fee, worth the effort.
