On a big block, what are the advantages of a reverse flow water pump vs. a standard water pump? Are there any drawbacks?

If you decide to get on I have an extra. On my B1 motor they used the outlet sides to add a line to the heads at the center ex port area. I will probably delete that extra cooling and use a standard pump.

So is it being used as a reverse flow then? Do you have any pics?

Reverse flow cools the heads first.

is it another one of those things that, it's a mixed opinion whether or not it is a beneficial or detrimental move? The reason I say that is, you don't hear of many people doing it.

This was the KOS 496 with B1 heads. It had the Indy reverse flow and a elec water pump to match. They had tapped into the pump sections that provide the water pressure and routed that extra flow to the heads near the center ex ports for added cooling there (unless it was the opposite and they were taking the hot water out directly. Since I am gonna be using a stock water pump housing with an elec pump front face where the bolts attach as a mounting surface for the Vortech blower plate I am putting on that motor I do not need the reverse flow setup or the pump any more.

Damn, that was a long sentence. You want the Indy reverse flow adapter and the water pump? Let me know and we'll decide what it is worth shipped.

It might work okay for drag racing where the engine doesn't really get very hot but you probably don't want to try it on a street car and I'm positive that you would kill a circle track engine if you tried to reverse cool it.

The physics are against reverse cooling. GM tried and it decided to go back. Not sure if any other OEM has tried reverse cooling since then. It takes a heck of a water pump to be able to push air bubbles down. If you can't push the air bubbles down then you need to bleed the air out of the high points.

That's a good point. I figured it would be a good thing to cool the heads first. Especially if you are running any kind of boost, for preventing any detonation issues. I didn't even consider the air bubble issue.

I'm under the impression that all the NASCRAP motors have reverse cooling as well as a lot of the road course roundy rounder type racers use it also

I was talking with a super stock Hemi racer a few years back about the air bubble problem and he said he used water wetter and ran the pump while filling.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead
