The engine block numbers located on the front of the engine block, under the driver's side cylinder head, read:
DW34023850300 01

What is that number supposed to match?

That is the engine serial number. It will match nothing else on the car.

The D indicates the 1968 model year & not all '68 engines were stamped with a VIN, so.......

Check the top, back of the block where it mates to the transmission bell for a partial VIN.

DW34023850300 01

D = 1968
W = Windsor, ONT engine plant
340 = 340 cu.in.
2385 = Wednesday 2/7/68 assembly date
0300 = 300th engine assembled that day
01 = ??

& ALL '68 factory installed 340s should have a partial VIN stamp - top rear by the engine/trans parting line.

Is that the oil sending unit in that picture?

Also, for a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda, should the VIN sequence number (last six digits in VIN) match the S.O. number found on the fender tag (last line, last nine digits)?

The pic is a 440HP, but the 340 block is similarly stamped.

It should be stamped with the last 8 of the VIN number. 8B123456 or similar

The S.O.# does NOT match any part of the VIN, the S.O.# is made up of the SPD (scheduled production date) & a 6 digit number taken from the order form that specific car was spec'ed out on.

On my 1968, the S.O. Number reads:

423 132454

I took the "423" to mean April 23rd build date (scheduled production date?). The 132454 matches the radiator core support. I haven't removed the trunk weather stripping to check if it matches that too. I assume it does.

Did any of this change in 1970 (example, VIN and SO number matching)?

I don't understand how 2385 comes out to 2/7/68. Is 2385 the number of days from some epic time?

Things changed again for the 1969 model year (as '68 was different than '67).

The 4-digit dates are from a 10,000 day calendar that started some time in 1962 (I think)

Is the S.O. number supposed to match the core support or the sequence number in the VIN? What should match the core support?

For 1968 the SO number on the fender tag should match the body stampings. The VIN sequence should be found on the engine and transmission.

Did that change in 69 or 70?

A friend of mine says his VIN matches the radiator core support, not the S.O. number of the fender tag. That's why I ask. I just want to make sure things were done differently in 68 versus 70.

Yes, 1968 and prior only. In later years the VIN sequence should match the body stampings and engine & trans stampings.
