The Vegas heat and age got the better part of my dash, giving me several lovely cracks in it. While the dash is out, I am interested in replacing the top of the dash or perhaps "capping" it.

My interior is getting new carpet [4spd and ditching the console], a new headliner and I will also be adding a Vintage Air under-dash kit. Other than that, the interior isn't being freshened up much.

Originality is not a major driver for the decision, as long as it closely resembles stock and doesn't have bad warping or gaps, it'll work for my need.

Dante's is selling a $139 E-body cap that appears to do what I am looking to do. How is the fit on these caps? Pretty reasonable?

I used one on this customer's car. Actually fit pretty good. This was on a 70 and had to re-use the original emblem which doesn't recess like the original pad.

I put a dash cap on a 74 Challenger a few years ago. It worked out well. No, the grain isn't right and no, it's not as soft as a pad, but on a driver it is totally acceptable.
I found that by cutting off the original vinyl skin with a bread knife, I could get the cap to sit nicely. I glued the entire surface with urethane and also used the urethane to smooth in a few edges. The result was very good for a driver type resto. Mine was black which was a plus too
