Working on a 1990 360 equipped with a mystery comp cam w/ no fuel pump eccentric, Edelbrock heads with Proform Roller Rockers. Engine pops and farts spuratically throughout rpm range, valve tips indicate heavy wear on exhaust side, but push rods measure 6.5". I tried mocking up with 7.5" push rods like I run on the same heads and rocker arms as my 78 360,but they are way too long and won't even bolt down. Is there a huge difference between cam and valvetrain on an early 360 to a 1990 360?

How much preload do you have with the 6.5" pushrods? You might do a compression test for a start. when it's acting up is it at part or WOT (or both)?

Acting up at WOT, valves adjusted to zero lash + 1/2 turn per manufaturer spec. Geometry just seems wrong, not sure why so different from a 78 360 w/eddy heads to a 1990 360 w/eddy heads. Camshaft/lifter/pushrod sizes that much different?

the roller lifter have taller bores with a machined pocket for the dogbones.

the roller lifter is taller than a flat tappet by almost an inch.

the PR is much shorter for the roller lifters and stock shaft mount rockers.

make sure the PR is not hitting the side of head in the PR hole. on older LA heads mixing roller cams the early heads have a smaller hole than a roller cam LA head.

the angle of the PR is worse on a roller block needing the larger PR hole in the head.

sure none are bent or to long hanging a valve open?

correct spring pressures? roller lifters are heavy and will bounce on the lobe if not enugh spring pressures.

I run the hughes whiplash roller cam in a 91-318 with stock valve gear with a set of comp 901 springs.

also have the hughes fuel pump extention for the short nose roller cams.. worth the 25$ for sure.

you are correct, it is a roller. I forgot about the lifters being taller..... Will check pushrod clearances, but still don't like how the roller tip contacts the valve stem. Only works the exhaust side, almost off of the valve tip when closed. Might call Proform and see what they suggest.

ede + hyd roller = pushrods hitting the holes in head.

Pull pushrods and look for a shiny spot. If shiny spot you need to relieve the holes for clearance. The holes in my ede's ended up being oval shaped when done.

I thinking this is the issue also.
