I finally got my freshly rebuilt 904(999) trans in the car and the stupid holley blue pump has failed? That is the least of my worries. I primed a fuel line to start the car and have a loud buzzing sound coming from the front of the trans...... I did overfill the trans before starting it and about a quart of fluid went on the floor. I figured I would start it in neutral and take it from there but after 20 seconds of running I shut it off. This is the same trans that busted the front input shaft and I wonder if it took out the converter as well??? I did place the car in gear and reverse as well and it appeared to be normal aside from the huge buzzing sound.

Anybody care to take a stab at what this might be??? TBF

Check to see if the dustcover for the trans is rubbing on the flywheel or convertor. I got burned once with that on a jeep with a 318.

Did you have the converter checked after it broke the input?

Ditto on the dust cover. IIRC, the small block one has some tabs that can get on the wrong side and rub the converter face.

Hmmmm... That may be the issue here... I did have a split in the dustcover by the starter so maybe a part of that is rubbing on the flywheel???? It sure is loud and it varies with rpm. I hope that is the problem..... I won't be able to check for a while as I go in for shoulder surgery in the morning so I will be out of service for a while..... TBF

Thanks... it will be while before I can get back to the car..... the numbness is starting to wear off now I'll be popping pain pills for a while!!!! I'll be off for 3 months so I will surely be increasing my post count here on Moparts!!! TBF

I had both my shoulders done earlier this year and it took about 30 days from each surgery for me to get back to work on a slightly limited basis. You'll be surprised as how soon you'll be back at it.

I cant believe that after all we did to persuade you to keep the 904 that it is acting up again! Keep those pain pills handy you may need em

oh yeah... I'm thinking the trans is just fine... I will remove the dust cover and chuck it but I have to remove the mini-starter too so it will be while..... TBF

I had a cover that was split. Couldn't see the split until it was off since it was around the starter area.

Sounded like something in the trans or engine would come flying off any second.

The noise was so loud I could not belive it. Much louder than converter bolts hitting the back of the block....The tin cover must act like a megaphone or something because it is incedibly loud!!! much louder than a rod knock !!!!!!

I really wanted to bring the car down to bradenton for the arm drop deal this weekend but maybe next time.....
It looks like I will have to get a new fuel pump or a rebuild kit for a holley blue... I think I will start another thread for that..... I have the time!! TBF

Finally felt good enough to get under the car and take the starter out... dust cover was split and bent with obvious signs of scraping the flywheel!!!! Now I'm back in bidness
and new trans works great!!! TBF

The 904 lives

Tell me about it.... I am super glad I don't have to pull the trans again.... It works better than it ever did and has nice firm shifts. The A-999 is back from the dead!
And the car is faster now to boot???? I put a quick change spring pod in for the secondaries and added a heavier spring. No more bogging for me. 390 lights the tires from a stop and has mucho traction issues now!!!! Single plane intake has great off idle response now that the carb is not bogging down. I can't wait to get my proform main body in and get it jetted right. This is an easy 12 second car now!!! TBF

Arthroscopic surgery is a miracle... Exactly 1 week after surgery and I am in no pain unless I try and lift my arm up a bit..... TBF
