I am rebuilding a 904 for my brother, was built by a well known trans and converter builder. On dissassembly, I found the larger diameter spring for the front kickdown servo missing. Has anyone else run into this? I do not know of any reason for leaving it out. Any suggestions?

I don't leave them out but different years had different servo designs.

Prior to '71 most (all?) 904 kickdown servos had only the smaller inner spring.

Thanks for the replies. It is a 1974 trans case, and does not have a load control servo. I disassembled another trans with the same type servo and removed the larger diameter spring and installed it in the 1974 case. I guess I will find out how it works. My thought is that the band will release quicker with the added spring tension.
