I need some tips on getting the rear window out of my 68 Coronet. I got the trim removed no problem but I really don't want to break this thing trying to cut the butyl. There has to be some slick tips and tricks for not breaking one. I am thinking of buying one of those $20 tools that are basically a loooong utility knife. How do you guys do it ?....all tips appreciated !!!!!

I did it on a 73 Challenger. I took a piece of thin steel cable and fished it through the adhesive. My dad and I sawed back and forth all the way around the windshield and back glass. The adhesive was still a little tacky and would stick to itself a little even after the wire had gone by. We just took our time and got both of them out.

I called the local auto glass shop and had them come out and remove the front and rear glass for me.
They charged $60 but to me it was well worth the peace of mind. That rear glass being curved is not an easy one to replace if you break it.

From the outside, I used a utility knife and kept cutting away the material until I was celar down to the sheet metal. Then, from the inside, I worked a modified putty knife to "pull out" the adhesive. I took a cheap harbor freight putty knife and ground a hook on the end. I also bent the blade a little bit so I could have a good hold. Took about two hours of work. I did not even think about putting pressure on the glass until I could fish the putty knife all the way around the glass. The butyl stays pretty sticky so a little even force to puch the glass out was still needed after I went around the window a few times.

I bought the tool and it was still bite to get out. My window had been in there for 40 years.
it is an L shaped cutter with a t handle on a cord to pull on.

I second the small steel cable, like a guitar string. Used that on the 69 roadrunner rear window. 2 people saw back and forth, helps if you make a handle on each side, can use a piece of wood dowell or something. Gives you something to hold on to and get the string tight.
