Hello Moparts.

My 1999 Ram 1500 5.2L threw a code this morning. It's P0505 as described in the subject.
The truck is idling and running fine.
About a year ago the idle air motor went out and was replaced. Back then, it did not set a code.
Where should I start checking first? The idle motor was not a Mopar part, just whatever brand the parts place sold me.

To add slightly more information that might help- ever since owning the truck, I've had an odd idle problem where first thing in the morning it starts fine then when it idles down it starts running rough, then the idle speed goes back up. The happens about two times and goes away once the truck is warm. Wondering if that issue overworked my IAC and burned it out.

Thanks.

Since it's a jobber part, it's most likely the problem.

There was a jobber camshaft position sensor in our '04 Neon when we bought it, and same as yours: it worked great for a year or so, and then the code showed up. I put a Mopar one in and haven't had a problem since.

I'd advise to go back to a Mopar part. There just is no room for aftermarket sloppy calibration when it comes to todays' fine-tuned computers.

When the OEM ones give issues just clean them with brake cleaner and they last a fairly long time.

The idle in my '01 Ram started to fluctuate a little, I cleaned it, and it's been good for over 200,000 miles.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks.

I'm also going to upgrade my plug wires because I think I put in cheap ones and that may be a reason for my cold start miss.

I had a 99 Ram with a 360 in it. If I let the truck sit for a week or longer it would sometimes idle high for awhile until it warmed up or sometimes even longer. I would just spray out the throttle body and it would fix the problem for awhile. I really think it had something to do with the ethanol in the fuel gumming up. If I drove it daily, I never had a problem.

While you are at it, get a spray can of Berrymans B12 and an old toothbrush and clean your throttle body. There will be a buildup of crud around the throttle plates, IAC motor seat and some other areas that cause funky idle issues.
