I just had my alternator professionally rebuilt put a new reg Borg warner made in china it charges as high as 14.9 . and as low as 13.5 when idling at 750 rpm.

I put back my old reg not sure on the brand i think standard made in the use and it only charges as high as 13.5 and as low as 12.5 at a low rpm around 750 rpm

point or electronic reg? If the "standard" brand you have is charging well(& those figures look good) may I ask why you would not want to just keep it in there?

I haven't bought a VR for many years but as I recall "Wells" is the el-cheapo and "Standard" made pretty good stuff. I tried several years ago and noticed some variation in their operation even from identical brands, so I adopted the 'use whatever produces the charging voltages I like' approach.

Sorry brother took over the computer lol.

I don't like the standard b/c at idle everything dims interior gauges headlights and etc...

It is the electronic this is in a 71 challenger.

The borg warner charged higher at idle nothing dimed but 14.9 is a little to high i get worried it might be too much.

Ya wells is the cheap stuff i used to work for an auto parts company that sold some of there stuff was junk other things were ok.

I never had a problem with standard before they ahve 3 lines

tru tec = cheap, standard= middle of the line and blue streak= top of the line stuff. Maybe i will just have to keep trying different regs to get the voltage like you said.

I reread your post & 13.5 is good on the high end but the 12.5 at idle is not enough & the lights are dimming.

My new Denso alternator charges up to 14.9 right after start up, then settles down to 14.2 (constant) after a few minutes. The colder it is outside the higher the alternator will charge by a couple of tenths. I have no worries. The Denso has a built-in regulator.

Before the Denso, I ran a voltage regulator from Autozone, with a stock alternator. The highest it would charge was 14.7 after start up, then settle to 14 volts above 1,000 RPM's, 12.5 at idle.

mine never settled down it stays at a nice finger crossing 14.9 while crusing.

Are you sure the gauge is working correctly? It may be reading high. Batteries will take 15 volts OK, but that's about it. That's why 14.9 for a short time is not a worry. My "guess" is that 14.9 constant is OK too. This is assuming that the wiring is up to par. Hopefully an expert on the subject will chime in so we both know for sure.

I'd try yet another brand of voltage regulator. I know that two different regulators I ran were something like three tenths off from each other. One was from Autozone, the other from CarQuest.

Gauge checks out Good i went to the battery with a voltmeter to double check.

wiring under the hoood is 1 year old under the dash i still have to do.

I will being purchasing another reg this weekend.

Gets too dark early know i get off at 4:00 by the time i get home bye bye light.

Why not use the new mopar resto voltage regulator ??? It's 15-20 bucks and even has a 71 date code...I've got the 70 date coded unit for my barracuda and it works like a champ...

LOL you know what i am not used to getting anything from mopar since they don't make much well... at least compared to a chevy . I might try that.

I got the new Mopar re pop and seems to work ok on my 70 Coronet. Make sure you take the paint off the back though for a good solid ground...dont ask me how I know this.
