I put an electric fan on my 64 Dodge. As expected, it pulls quite a bit of current when it's on. Anybody that has done this: did you replace/upgrade any factory wiring (for example, wiring from the alternator, etc)? If so, what did you do?

Thanks

run it off a relay with the power coming from the battery terminal at the starter relay. the control lines can be smaler off the fuse block

That's how I have it set up- the run power is coming directly off of the battery and into a relay. I still see the ammeter quite a bit higher when it's on than when it's off. I would say it runs 3/4 of the gauge on the 'charging' side when the fan is on, just a bit to the 'charging' side when off....I just don't know what current this wiring is made to carry for extended periods.

man, that is high. id be nervous running all that juice through my stock wiring. so whats happening is the fan takes so much power, its dragging the system voltage down so the alt is cranking out the power to keep up. and all that power ig going in and out of your bulkhead connectors and ammeter to juice the fan.

how many amps does your fan pull?

Since you didn't state whos electric fan you used, go with 10ga wire. It's good for 30a as many fans will pull from 20-30 amps.

Might also want to check the battery. If you are pulling heavy amps and the battery is weak, you'll see the amp meter go up since the alt has to kick in to supply the additional current.

It's a factory fan from a 1992 Caravan. I would assume the bulkhead should be bypassed.....I think the wiring I'm concerned with goes from the alternator through the bulkhead to a junction, eventually to the ammeter, from the other side of the ammeter to the starter relay. I believe a lot of this is pretty large wire already- I'll have to check the actual sizes.
