This has probably been beat up fairly well on here but I would like some opinions on crankshaft sizes verses the specs.
I have a 1974 318 factory crank with the mains sizes of #1 2.4997, #2 2.4997, #3 2.4991, #4 2.4994, #5 2.4995 the 3 and 4 are the ones in question being .0004 and .0001 undersize.

The .0001 doesn't bother me but is the .0004 to much for a street engine and ready for a regrind.

.0004 wouldn't bother me a bit but if you are talking .004 it would. I don't like anything looser than .002 and preferably closer to .0015. We never had a problem even with out race engines with these clearances. We were told that this too tight for racing but they held up with out a problem so---------------

The journals are all round I checked them with our calibrated micrometers in multiple spots and did the same on all the rod journals.

Thanks for the info

I would loose sleep over myself I like to start out with a fresh smooth true bearing surface.
Give yourself peace of mind and cut it 10-10

For half a thousandth?

You'll be lucky to get it back from the crank grinder any better than it is.

You need to find a new machinist if your stuff doesn't come back perfect like it should.
The OP seems concerned about it and if he has any concerns now is the time to make it absolutely perfect. He's thinking about it now do do you think he's gonna forget about that half a thou when he hears a slight noise after the engine is in the car

Very common on the early 318 to be like this, I've taken Scotchbrite to them to increase the bearing clearances more than once Of course I'm talking on those that where to big from the factory, and out of round and bent

Get a good polish on it and go. You'll likely find more variance in the main housing bores than you've found on the journals. The end clearance is what you need to concern yourself with. Round, straight journals that get you the clearance needed is what you should be after.

Journal sizes don't tell you much. You have to put in the block with the main bearings and check the clearance. That is what matters.

Thanks for all the reply's been ill all weekend and now just getting back on here. To clear up a few points I had this to a buddies local machine shop and it has been polished just to clean up the original scratches and some very slight rust staining. I am going to check the clearances with new bearings in the block and go from there.

Thanks again
