Wifes '00 4Runner has a wimpy 2.7 4 cyl. auto. in it. Very good condition and doesn't really need anything. It's OK around town but I really hate getting out on the highway with it.
I'm thinking a 5.9 swap so it will get out of it's own way.
What years are best? Seems like I read some year model trucks with manual trans, the computer will work with any trans. Thinking A518 w/ the 3 wire hook-up. Better suggestion?
Brake upgrades are simple so that isn't a problem. Rear diff. is an 8" and lived well in some V-8 'yota 4x4 trucks I built.
Looks like a long , cold, winter around here this year so I need something to keep me and the grandson busy.

The best years IMO are the '91-'95 OBD1 with the EGR. The '96 & up used a hotter thermostat to eliminate the EGR but in the process became susceptible to cracking in the combustion chambers.

A 5.3 LS and 4L60e would probably be easier and cheaper and more power and better milage.

Any room under that hood for a turbocharger?

What about just a Toyota V6 swap? Maybe add a manual trans to it and be done. I ASSume you don't have to worry about emissions.

Boy, those 2.7s are great with a 5 speed.

I think I would turbo charge it.

The answer varies depending on the laws of the state. Any engine swap can be done here in California as long as the engine and management are from the same year or newer.

I'd consider swapping the whole thing for a Durango...

As long as you'd don't ride your mule into walmart, aren't you pretty well good to go?

Tim I have seen a 302 Ford swap in a 02 Runner before and it seemed like an easy swap because it's much narrower than most other V-8's.
I didn't get to talk to the owner and all I know was it wasn't a C6 or a regular C4 as far as my knowledge of Ford transmission identifying skills go.

Unless you keep that mule in your bathtub, because that is illegal.

Maybe an AOD, don't think they made an FMX in a SB built pattern, but I'm not a Ford guy.

How about a late 4.3 Votec with a 7004R or R4 I can never remember. Ford 4.0 can be pretty strong as well.

Also needs to be same emissions category, as in no truck engines in a pass car.

They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Gus, I had an '83 and an '85 I put 302s in w/ a C4 adapted to the 'yota transfer. Stock manifolds from a '70 Torino 302 cleared the frame rails perfectly. That was back in my younger, wild and crazy days.
I had considered doing a 4.0 (1GR) V6 or 4.7 {2UZ} V8 Toyota swap but they're just too expensive (5VZ 3.4s take different frame mounts from a 2.7 4 cyl.).
Pull-a-parts here are full of vans and pick-ups w/ 5.9s so I thought that would be the way to go. Push comes to shove I may wind up with a Furd motor again.
And I'm out of the Atlanta area so no emissions. I could get a "hot rod" waiver from the state if I did move back into a county that did emissions testing.

So a 302 is ok but a modern 5.3 LS with aluminum heads is not? Fair enough.

How about a 4BT swap?

There's a step by step of a guy bolting in a 7M into a pickup with the correct ecm from the Cressida he yanked the motor from. It was a pretty clean swap and that engine has plenty of torque and highway manners as well. I can't imagine the amount of stump pulling torque that truck would have in low range with 5.13's and that 7M

Gus, I actually put a 5M-GE from an '85 Supra into a friends '84 4x4 back in the late 80s. Same deal- he bought the whole car for the engine/harness, ecm, and bellhousing (5 spd. in the Supra). We originally cut the core support for a crossflow radiator but he wound up putting a new support back in it and used a 3VZ radiator. he towed a bass boat (really heavy back then) and was really surprised at the power. I helped do 4 of these trucks total and did my '83 in the middle. The 2nd one I helped with was another good friend. After a year or so he decided he wanted a 7M-GTE in his but totaled the truck before we could do it.

Oz, GM left a bad taste in my mouth years ago after I bought a '94 CC dually new. It had the 6.5 TD in it and was a nice truck until the dealer did the recall on it. It was all downhill from there including starting a lemon law buy-back and culminated in the truck burning to the ground early one A.M. (in the boonies headed deer hunting). The insurance inspector found a loose oil line to the turbo (replaced by the dealer the last time they worked on it) as the area where the fire started. Imagine my surprise when I found out that they were actually checking to see if I had burned the truck up.
