I have 71's {yes they are not the same}
The 71's are made so the metal part can bolt to it that goes behind the grill.
Maybe post a pic of each? thanks

It's easy. You just weld in a small piece to make the 71's look like a 70. The 70 grille will work with the stock 71's anyway.

Thanks Sheldon.
I know the 71 will work with the 70 grille but the 71's Clearly look like 71's and stand out as 71's {at least to me they do} So I was posting since I do not have a 70 to make a template to add the missing part. Also since I do not have them here with me I think the 71's have 2 holes that would need welded up as well?
I know they wil work the 71's were sold as crash parts for 70's by dealers.
I guess I should have asked in the org. question
Does anyone have pics of a 70 and 71 fender side by side?

The 71 fender can be turned into a 70 easily, just weld on a 70 headlight bucket mount. The 71 fender had a deeper recessed area due to the mounting of the 71 dual headlight bucket brackets. It sets the headlights back a little more than the 70 so the recessed area is deeper to allow room for the back of the headlight and wiring. The 70 can be modified to a 71 by making the front recessed area deeper like the 71. I robbed a couple pics from ebay for reference.

Kevin....just bend some metal that is the same thickness, and weld it in where the notches are cut out on your 71 fenders. Also, check to make sure the hood adjustment bumpers are in the same place on both fenders. You know, the one that has the rubber top on it that you can screw up and down to adjust the front of hood. Some fender have the thing towards the front, and others towards the rear. I have two 71 Challengers, and both are wearing their original fenders. One has the notches and the other one doesn't. The one that doesn't was an early built car and they had plenty of 70 fenders left over....lol. I know your Challenger is a 70, and that's why you want to fix them. Good luck

Guys: What he needs is a shot of an original 70 Challenger fender from the top front that shows the inner flange where the headlight bezel attaches.

Isn't there an issue in the way the extreme sides of the '70/71 grilles are attached to the '70/71 fenders? (2) Plastic push retainers on each side in '70 vs (2) small bolts w/washer in '71?

Yes you are 100% correct!
The 71 fenders work the same with headlights from what I have seen.
But the 71 fenders have a notch cut out and 2 holes for the metal filler that is behind the 71 grille.
I have seen Challengers that had 1 70 fender and 1 71 at shows. As much stuff as i have done to customise cars in the last 30 years of fooling with them, some stuff has to be right or it looks like a hach job!
I assume that the head lights are the same on both years of challengers. If not someone please step up and say they don't

Good info, don't mean to hijack the post, but have any of you ever noticed if the holes (where the screws go through the cables into the fender, under the hood, see above pic) are there on cars that did not get hood pins? Just curious.

Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160...

I think that this is what you're after:

The passenger side fender is an original, early/mid production '71 with the notch cut out of. It is basically the same as a '70 fender except for the notch. If that notch were filled, 99.99% of anyone looking at it would say it's a '70 fender.

The driver's side fender is a late production/NOS replacement '71 fender. It also has the notch, but there are several changes to make the stamped sections compatible with the 72-4 grilles & headers. Note that the hood bumper location is different and the extra oval hole near the rad support. Welding in the notch will not make these types of fenders look like true '70s or most production '71s.

Headlight buckets/brackets are the same for both '70-'71 - no issues there.

Thanks that a great pic
I saw a car localy at a show that was like that and should have taken a pic.I knew that there were such a crazy change
Strange how they changed the cars so much after just one year.
So if I have early run 71 they will have the hood buppers towards the rear.
And Late 71 will be towards the front.
Not that it matters since i have a glass hood
So that leads me to belive that the hoods were not the same with out crush zones{or i may be reading to much into it
Not that the placement of the buppers meen anything to me since I have a glass T/A hood from ASCP or what ever his name is.
It shoud be any easy fix to just weld in a patch on the 71's

Funny how the pic you have he has a clip in the hole not realy funny! But bet they never notice there was a differance when the car was painted, but did when it was to late and the grille was being installed.
