All the trans problems occurred during heavy tows (11K-18K lbs, but never overloaded. I will never own another truck with an NV4500 or G56 if I do any towing, why they tried an aluminum trans (G56) with Cummins torque is beyond me. The injector problems were both ends, wide open hydrauliced the engine and injector went dead burning a piston. I will definitely use a separate filter on my next truck.

The G56 has been pretty reliable all in all, my G56 hardly ever left the drive that it didn't have 12-15k behind it.

The biggest injector problems come from fuel that is not clean enough a good filter goes a long way on these trucks.

Looked at an '06 2500 over the weekend. 120,000 miles but mint in and out for $23,000. Thought it was odd that it had black fender flares on a dark red metallic body. Hmmm, several other used Rams on the lot had the same fender flares. Salesman says Oh no, we didn't put those on, no way we did that. I pulled up the online pictures and there are no flares, just a big rust hole above the rear wheel. So, it seems to be S.O.P. to cover the rust with flares and claim the truck is rust-free. Oh well, there is a 2004 for $19000 that I will check out this weekend.

If you are looking for a 3rd gen Ram I would buy a late 07 or 08 with the 6.7 motor and get a MEGA cab if you can afford it. Nothing wrong with the earlier 5.9 trucks but I don't understand why anyone would want to live with a 4 SPEED automatic when you can have a 6 speed automatic. 5.9s generally have a RE48 trans, have you seen one? they are puny, look like a 727 and your going to run 600lbs of torque through it? I'd much rather have the 68RFE from behind a 6.7 Cummins, it's beefier, you can also switch to a lower gear with the flick of a switch on the column. Now if you remove the DPF, EGR, and CAT you can also get just as good of mpg as any 5.9. I've had plenty of 6.7's that get 21-22MPG on the hiway. Looking at 04-05s doesn't even give you an option for a mega cab. Then you are looking at 06-08 for a mega. 2006 5.9 mega's are selling for a premium now because of all the buyers who think they are the only ones that get 20+ MPG. Oh, and 6.7 trucks all come with a factory exhaust brake which is cool as heck.

I don't want a mega cab, in fact if they still made a quad cab, I would buy new. I need to plow my office parking lots in the winter and in the summer I will be using it for trips to the strip and cabin. I need to be able to maneuver around some obstacles in the parking lots so I don't want to go too big. One of the above posts said the 2007+ Rams don't have the same rust problems as the earlier ones so I will expand my search to include the 2007-08. Thanks

All the 3rd Gen's have the same rust problem over the rear wheel wells because of the support design. If you can afford newer that is the way I would go. The 4th gen CREW cab back seat has way more room than a 03-08 quad cab. If you get a short box the wheelbase would still make it easy enough to maneuver as a plow truck. I just bought a 12 Mega cab Laramie so I will be selling my 2010 Crew Shortbox Laramie 4x4 diesel, only has 23k on it and gets 21MPG.

The injector problems are definitely fuel related, at our shop we just replace injectors in a 04.5 5.9 that had almost 300k on its original injectors, the truck is serviced regularly and used everyday to haul livestock. That same truck has a 6 speed manual that was replaced with a rebuilt at 180k and by no means does it haul heavy loads. On a side note, we replaced a 6 speed manual in an 08 6.7 cat delete, with a tuner, 4 door single axle, the owner said he saw 50k a couple times on the scale with his 5th wheel hauling large hay bales!
That was an expensive one with close to 6k in clutch and rebuilt trans.

Wouldn't a 98.5 be a 24v? My friends has a 98.5 sport quad cab, it's a 24v.

Anyways...

As much as I like my 01, it doesn't ride anywhere as nice as the newer ones in my experiences. If I parted with mine I would get an 03-06 6 speed... another friend had an 04 6 sp, I wish I had the $ to buy it when he sold it.

Sounds like a nice truck. A 2008 is almost a foot shorter than a 2010 I believe. That would let me park it in the third stall of my attached garage so I wouldn't have to keep it in my shop building. Even a 3rd gen would be tight.

Nope the 12v was available until mid 1998...after that they switched to the 24V. I should have said "early 1998 12V trucks"

I agree that the Gen3's are much nicer driving than the Gen 2's.

Again; the 2003/early 2004 305/555 trucks with the NV5600 get my vote as the BEST Dodge diesel ever built....and I own a 6.7 truck with the 6 speed auto....won't be buying another one.

Myself, my closest friend and my cousin all have 2003's and haven't had a single issue with any of them. Mark and I both haul very heavy truck campers with trailers behind and my cousin has a large toy hauler 5th wheel...wish I could say the same about the other 4 Cummins rams I own.
