I recently obtained Super Stock rear wheel well templates from Bill Reilly (Reilly Motorsports). I placed them on the car and they do not look correct in my opinion. Too much would be taken out of the front portion. I don't want to hack up these quarter panels if its not correct.

It seems like everyone has their own template. Attached are images of Reillys template and two different templates I located online.

Your opinion? Has anyone done this?

Thanks Moparts!

I found out years ago that if you take a passenger side front fender and set it up against the drivers side quarter the outline is perfect. Here is a pic of my original Hemi Dart for comparison...

What are you lining it up to?

Exactly, the front fender opening is the template for the rear, but that's your starting point for a Hurst rendition, IMHO your better off installing the tire you plan on running, mock up your own template opening based on the front fender opening, then measure twice, cut once, rather than trim, trim, trim, then mount the tire of choice, and trim again

Ok but how are you lining it up to cut it??? Can anyone confirm this to be true? I just don't want the car to be butchered, I am trying to build a replica as close as possible.

That is the tough part, nobody seems to know exactly how it was done originally. I know several people that have used the O'reilly template and it looked fine. I have seen other templates for sale but do not know for sure where they come from. If you look at a factory car, it is butchered. If you are trying to get a factory looking car it will look like shinola. My car has been butchered through the years worse than the factory did it. I believe all the templates have been drawn off of factory cars, so that is why they are all a little different.

The issue with the Reilly template is that it requires you to remove to much from the front. If I were to follow the template, I would have to re-weld part of it back on because the template goes past the inner wheel well.

The front should match right up to the back of the rocker panel. Don't forget to leave some metal for bending a lip around.

just my opinion: part of the issue is when the cars were converted to pro stock and modified where rules were less stringent then super stock. being able to use narrower axles allowed bigger tires which required more metal removed and different angles on the openings. also while building my tribute car i talked to john balow of mcr and he said that because different shifts worked on the same car he had seen differences in the left and right profiles on the same car. bob torzzi (sp) said these were the crudest race packages chrysler ever produced and when they were picked up/delivered the were nothing like the over restified examples we see today. i will show a picture of my wheelwell only because i have been complemented many times on how the profile looks original and to maybe help the op out. be for warned i did not cut them as high as the original cars as it is not tubed and a 295/65x15 mickey was the largest tire i could fit on the car

here is a finished picture. also check with "troy" as he use a projecter to enlarge/project the profile of a hemi dart diecast car onto a wall to get his templet.

The front portion that got cut on these cars was after they allowed bigger slicks in 69/70.

Here's how Troy did it on his Hemi Dart clone. It was in MCG a couple years ago if you remember it.
