Mocking up a stroker 440 to clearance the block for the rods using Eagle 4.15" crank and Eagle H-beam rods. I haven't used H-beam rods before and have a dumb question. I know that there are cap splitters to remove the cap from the rod but I don't have one of these - is there a good safe way to split the caps? Am I going to run into the same problem removing the rods after installing them on the crank? Thanks,
Mark

Loosen the cap screws and tap the screw heads while
you hold the cap... on the crank just tap the screws
after loosening them a couple turns

Since they are cap screws and not "bolt through with nuts" they should fall apart after screws are removed.

when on crank back off bolts a bit and tap bolts to split in a soft jaw vise slight tap with plastic hammer after removing or loosening cap screws.

I second what Mr P Body said. I worked in a Engine Machine shop. That's all you have to do is some nice lite taps. It work's real well and really don't need a rod splitter. Also is this all brand new part's being put together?

They don't. The locating dowels around the bolts keep them together even without the bolts. But they do separate fairly easy with taps from a hammer as others have said.

But I did buy a cap splitter and rod vise too.
I measure the rod ends with a dial bore gauge, so I need to torque the rod bolts in the rod vise, then after measuring the bearing size, I use the cap splitter for disasembly. If you are tring to use plastigauge, you will have to put it on the piston side of the rod bearing, not the cap side.
