Simple question: is the new Hemi engine currently produced by Chrysler/Dodge and put into Challengers, Chargers, Rams, etc, really a "hemi" engine?

I was at a Mopar car show a few weeks ago in Fort Collins, CO. At the show they had a modern Hemi cylinder head and a 1964-1971 style Hemi cylinder head next to one another. The older style head had a hemispherical combustion chamber; no question. The modern hemi head, however, appeared to be a cross between a hemispherical combustion chamber and a wedge (ie, had what appeared to be quench pads).

It is the existence of what appeared to be quench pads that made me wonder if it really is a "hemi" head. Is it?

Sorry if this topic has been beaten to death. I don't recall seeing a post on the subject and searching the forum for "hemi" produces a lot of hits.

When this 3rd gen hemi first came out, many then were complaining that Chrysler was stretching the definition in order to capitalize on their former glory. Likely as the how you define 'is' as described by a former government leader,,,it depends upon what the definition of 'is" "is".

No any modern automotive engineer would describe the gen3 hemi head as a pent roof design.....

They are all Hemis. Just a little different. The gen 3 has the best looking combustion chamber I've ever seen,.

More of a "pinched " HEMI, still hemispherical in a big way but improved, you don't need huge piston domes to get compression. It still has the opposing valves which seem to be the biggest advantage

Even the respected 426 wasn't a true Hemi. The word HEMI infers a half of a sphere. The engineers ever first referred to the HEMI as a "Spherical roof" chamber but HEMI sounded better.

None of the Hemi's were actually half a sphere.

OMG - Not this again!

To quote Tom Hoover, Godfather of the 426 HEMI, "the current HEMI is a HEMI and the folks that don't think so don't know what they're talking about!"

BTW, Mr. Hoover had input with the Chrysler engineers when the GENIII HEMI was being developed around 2003.

Chrysler trade marked the name hemi so other manufacturers can't use it to describe their engines

Yes and thank God.

Mopar exec Joe Hilger had the foresight to get with the Chrysler patent/trademark attorneys in the 1990s and make it happen.

All you need to do is look at the top of the piston and the two quench pads in the combustion chamber to see that there is no hemi here.

Bingo! I've got two 5.7L Hemis and I love both of them!

IIRC the '50s "Hemi" V8s by Chrysler/Dodge/DeSoto had the "most" hemispherical heads, later refined by Tom Hoover and those engineers to become the 426 Hemi in 66-71, and refined even farther (modernized) to become the 5.7/6.1/6.2/6.4L Hemi engines of today.

5.7L Hemi...not perfectly hemispherical combustion chambers, but still a GREAT engine for what it is. I wouldn't buy a new Mopar without a Hemi (in the models that have it available, that is).

"Hemi" is a trademark owned by Chrysler Corporation (now by FCA) so, technically, ANY engine they produce could be branded a "Hemi" (as evidenced by the 2.6 Mitsu "Hemis" from the eighties.

What makes a "Hemi" a "Hemi" is not just the domed combustion chamber. The (arguaby) most important feature of the "Hemi" head is the opposed arrangement of the intake and exhaust valves which allows for larger valves and straighter (and larger) ports which give the Hemi a clear advantage in high RPM horsepower.

The addition of the quench areas and twin plugs address the low-end deficiencies of the old hemis (remember that, stock for stock, the six pack engines could, and often did, embarrass the mighty Hemi.

So, in conclusion. The Hemi combustion chamber isn't (and has never been) truly hemispherical. But this engine shares the most import aspect of the old Hemi's design. Is it a Hemi? Chrysler says it is...and since they own the trademark, well...who am I to argue?
