I'm getting ready to do a cam swap/upgrade from a hydraulic to a solid lifter.
What are the opinions on having the new cam Nitrided?
Is it worth doing?

I was planning on running the EDM lifters. It seems that the EDM lifters are all set up for push-rod oiling which I don't have. Does that create any issues? So far I've been told running the solid push-rod (non push-rod oiling) isn't a problem but since that was by people selling the lifters I wanted to ask people here who have run them that way.

My solid flat tappet is a custom grind I got from Dwayne Porter and he nitrided it and I also use the EDM lifters. The cam and lifters have been in my eng since June 2011 with zero problems. Ron

Mine are Comp. Like I said no problems at all. Do you have a place in mind to nitride your cam ? Ron

When I had talked to both Dwayne Porter and Bullet I got the impression that most of them sent it it a place in Detroit to get Nitrided. (but I could be mistaken on that).

Dwayne told me he has a friend that does them for him. Not sure who or where his friend does them but I am 100% satisfied. Ron

Do that and try tool steel lifters. Then its all supposed to live. I can't imagine EDM holes in the lifters helping anything. The lobe is being flooded with oil already from leaks around the lifters and the splash from the crank.

Nitriding is a surface hardening process, it works.
About the lifters - if your pushrods don't have holes in them, they block off the holes in the tops of the lifters, so it's no worries. The standard parts store replacement HT2011 lifter has had those top oiling holes for as long as I can remember and that's what people have been using since forever.
R.
Thanks!
I figured it was probably not even a issue on the lifters but I wanted to get more opinions on it rather than just the place selling the lifters.
Are there any preferences on brands on the EDM lifters?
From reading older posts it seems like the Howards Cams EDM lifters have a higher cup height like a hydraulic lifter. If that's true I should be able to reuse the pushrods that I'm currently using (Crane).
It's about $100 to Nitride the cam, but adds time to how soon I 'll get it.
Sounds like it's worth the wait.
Are you running howards now ? If not you'll need new pushrods and if that is the case get them oil thru as they will only help with a hemi and the potential for burned pushrod cups/balls.

I am a firm believer in Nitriding! Comp Cams did an article 2 years ago about the cam in my Duster. At that time they were very impressed at the 600 passes I had on the cam. We are on track to complete this season on the same cam and should have close to if not just over 900 passes on the same cam! We run comp non EDM lifters on this cam.
600 Pass Duster
I put a nitrided Comp, with Crower Cam savers lifters , in a 440 I had my hands in a couple years ago after the shelf stock Comp cam started going away 6 mins into break in , haven't heard of any issues.
Comp should just do it to all their flat tappet cams just to end the bad publicity they are getting .
