Mockup & see how the end gaps compare to the cork gasket thickness as deck height/milling/head gasket thickness can put that anywhere & using cork end gaskets that are a hair too thick can cause a front water port leak over time. If not using the supplied end gaskets clean the metal surfaces SQUEAKY CLEAN before applying black RTV. I prefer to cut my own end gaskets of the right height & use some gasket cement on em rather than no gaskets and RTV. As said composition gaskets on the side gaskets. I use Permatex #99MA "high tack" the red adhesive in the spray can on em. It goes on light/even and is extremely tacky which is just what is needed to hold those side gaskets in place

Factory foam seals on ends gasket sealer on both side of intake and silicone on edges between gaskets and foam Remove the pins or carefully grind the pins down Like stated leave manifold set up for 24 hours>DO NOT block heat passage unless you are in tropical climate. on street car I would not do it period Also run a min of 180 stat
DOH! that's true, I forget I am in the Fl heat with very mild winters. never needed a choke myself.
but I do run a 190* t-stat when it is blocked. I have a stacked alum plate/gasket heat disapator under the carb and it stays luke warm in dogdays of summer with it blocked.
with the edelbrock carb fuel perking/flooding/hard hot starts was the issues I had till I got it blocked and staying luke warm on the carb after a 40 mile ride in the summer heat.
this is with the LD4B on 360 headed 318. with it opend the intake and edelbrock carb got way to hot to the touch.

Lay the intake in the valley and slide it all the way to one side. Measure the gap between intake and head. Whatever you see, add .060 to it and divide by two. If your intake gaskets aren't at least that thick, it may have issues sealing.
Just curious... Why "add .060"?

Give it some crush. If you don't add any, the intake may bottom on the end rails. You want the intake floating above the end rails when it's installed

Got it. Makes sense!

The Intake is probably 40 years old? Yes it is used, no it does not have pitting. Yes Robert I will mock it up, Yes I will most likely use some high tack to help hold-em in place and provide more sealing. Yes I will through the tin ones over the roof. Paul, I dont know where to get the factory foam seals plus I already have the FelPro ones, but I wil not block off the crossover...come on Scratch, you know I'm in PA! I will be using a new EB 1406 the one with the electric choke. I also have a thick carb gasket. Rob, thanks for the idea of measuring the intake gap to the head surface. These heads were just re-done and the shop shaved .02. Also, I am working with an old EB intake that may not be perfect, so I do want to look at thoses angles. What about the bolt torque on this?

The following is from a thread I had before just talking about tuning the 1406. It was a good read and swapping over to a tuning chart for the 1405 was a night and day difference in performance. Why the 1406 is so lean ootb compared to the 1405 makes no sense to me. Check out the Linky.
Prev thread: I've been reading all over the web, and in the edelbrock owners manual, about the performer series carbs and I feel a lot more prepared to do some tuning on this thing. This one http://vb.foureyedpride.com/archive/index.php/t-74438.html offered some interesting thoughts/opinions with other guys trying it and reporting great results, so I copied ijt and was very happy with the results as well.
