I replaced the reman NAPA alternator and it did not fix the problem. The one I took off which only had less that 120 miles, which worked fine till then.. when I pulled it off the rear bearing looked blue like the rotor shorted out.. I was only getting 12.64 volt off the large lead.. Put the new one on, still not charging,, getting 12.64 volts off the power wire on the back of the alt... I installed a electronic voltage regulator when I restored the car,, all new wiring harness.. I'm thinking it fried the new regulator also when it shorted out.. But I still should get 14.2 volts out of the back of the alternator with the new alt. even with a bad regulator right? Amp gage works goods,, it shows discharge when lights are turned on.. Thanks for your help..

I don't think you will be getting full charge voltage from the alternator with a bad regulator because it doesn't sense any demand. I'm may be wrong. Be sure the regulator case has a good paint free ground between it and the body.

I think Stumpy is right about the regulator but why not take the alt back to NAPA and have them test it? most auto parts stores do that free of charge (pun intended )

yeah, it wouldn't be the first bad part out of the box.
I always make them test alt's and starters before I walk out of the store.

does it change when you speed up the engine?
Old style Mopar alternators didnt put out much power at idle speed.
you can also start the engine and pull the battery terminal off, if it dies the alternator is dead wiring bad or regulator, if it stays running you may be OK.

Points system... I ordered the electronic VR from YO.. When I installed the new wiring harness started the engine, everything worked just great.. The rear bearing on the other alternator was blue like the rotor shorted out.. replaced the alt. still no charge.. took it to Advance Auto, the alt was putting out 14.5 volts.. I reinstalled the alt. and put a new voltage regulator on and every thing works great.. I'm thinking the VR fried when the other alt. shorted out.. I reinstalled the old type VR.. I'm ready cruise.. Thanks for everyone's input.. By the way the alt will not show volts when the VR is inop.. I was wrong,, I thought it did.. Thank and keep the oily side down..
