I am on my third timing tape on my dart. The first one peeled the paint off with it, the next one I removed the paint and put it directly on the balancer. That was short lived, both have been cleaned very well. Whats the secret so I won't have to buy a new tape every time I need to adjust my rockers?

Mark the balancer , skip the tape...

What tape are you using ? I have an MP tape on a 383 balancer that I installed on the balancer in the summer or 1999 ?

I've used the MR Gasket timing tape, never lost one yet, but then again I seal the damper with a coat of clear engine paint after applying the tape to a FRESHLY PAINTED/CLEAN damper

The past two have been MP, this one is a Mr. Gasket. I think i will give the coat of clear on top of it a shot.

Or you could buy a quality balancer & be done with it for good. Also good for engine's longevity.

One guy told me once he used his wifes nail polish and he said it worked good to keep it on. Ron

Do one cylinder at a time. Adjust the intake when the exhaust starts to open, and adjust the exhaust when the intake begins to close a short ways.

Do one side of the car, then the other. Way easier. No tape needed.

same here but mine lasted 12 years. I put on another one last season after cleaning the balancer with lacquer thinner....then acetone....then As I laid down the new tape...i laid a bead down of Super Glue and pushed the tape down. Cut a rectangular hole the width of your balancer and 4" long and spray a high strength clear coat from a spray bomb...rotating in intervals to get coverage 3 times. Yeah...I did mine ON the car

As said: clean the dampener. pull the tape thru a rag with brake kleen. remove backing/install tape. seal it with several coats of clear lacquer. let dry well. OR use the timing tab as a ruler to make new marks & I only need (4): 10-15-20 and my total for my eng type. Never hurts to confirm exact TDC first. The spark plug hole tool is only $10 or break up a spark plug & drill/tap it. On adj your rockers you could bump the eng till the rotor is at the next plug wire (cap terminal) then adj that cyl or measure a strip of thin paper 5.694" with your calipers then use it as a ruler to make 3 addit'l marks around the dampener from the TDC slit then use these new marks to get the cyls' on TDC. Just me I think those tapes look hokey

Have the MSD timing tape on for quite some time, no nail polish, no clear coat. Sticks real good.
