Some day my '64Dog will not have to haul things other than A$$, and I'm tired of trying to keep kingpin bushings in it. The driver side kingpin bushing handles all the load from the steering box and wears out first. I like how it looks and handles with big tires on the front but those kingpins are getting me down.

So Im looking at 1998 - 2002 crown Vics and Town cars as a driver for the next two/three years, then as suspension donor for the 'Dog.

Anyone actually done this? Or are we still in "it oughta work" land?

Thanks,
R.

02 and earlier you have to cut the frame and splice in and 03 up have bolt in crossmember

Some have done it. There are a couple on Sweptline.org.

I think that 02/03 was the split when they went from steering box to rack and pinion steering.

It all happened at the same time.

Read a lot of swaps into ford trucks. The 2003 was the start of the cast aluminum crossmember/easy swap. I thank those who pointed it out.

It's just me, I guess, I like the '98 - 2002 wheels better, the 03s and up look like front wheel drive wheels. But the swap is so easy I guess that makes up for it. I was just dreading driving that 03 with the ugly wheels for a while, that's all.

Looking at Youtube videos, it's surprising what POS dirty frames some of the swaps go into. Don't prople pay attention? Also, a few hours with a grinder and those ford castings could look a whole lot better.

87-91 Dakota front frame splice is a great way to go on a sweptline.
Rack and pinion steering, independent, sway bar, disc brakes, proper bolt pattern, MOPAR, cheap and the frames are the same width. And yes the track width is almost exactly the same. Dakota's use a unique positive offset wheel. Bolt on a "normal" wheel and the track width is virtually the same as a sweptline.

I'm almost done the Crown Vic front suspension into my 1969 Fargo Sweptline 100.
So far, it's not been terribly difficult. Maybe just a bit more complicated than installing a Fatman IFS, but infinitely cheaper, and much better engineered!

I've still never seen anyone pull this off. There was one "finished" Sweptline on a Dakota frame that appeared on ebay. It had no bed on it probably because it didn't fit anymore without modification and the front wheels were pretty far inside the front fenders.

A slice would solve the bed issues if the frames are the same size at the splice.

I've heard people say this is an option but still haven't seen one finished.

I'm finally finishing my 1969 Fargo Sweptline project. The Crown Vic front end has worked out very well!

what did you do for your rear suspension to get that low? How much did you have to modify the front to make crown vic ifs work?

I believe one has to get the frame rails to the right width which IIRC isn't difficult, and also weld some reinforcing tubes into the frame so the bolts holding the suspension in place don't bend the C-channel.

There are Youtube videos and write-ups on doing this, usually on other makes but a ladder frame is a ladder frame.

In a perfect world I'd complete the Ford independent suspension swap with an independent rear from a late model Explorer.

I have a friend who put a Jag rear end under a Toyota 4WD pickup and he says the ride off-road is many times better than it was with the live rear axle.
