Questioning the block. I'll get the date tomorrow. Is there a big difference from what they built in the 90's to lately? I'll get the exacts, and maybe a build date on my block. It has the primary oiling to the main caps with the oil lines. Here is a pic. Is there a way to date the block? Thanks

Yes there are differences. Not only between old and new but also there are different "stages". Street block, race block etc. Some didn't have starter provisions. In the beginning they were water blocks with wet sleeves, now the street blocks are dry sleeve. Call Ken Black, he will be very helpful and tell you all about your block. What is your serial number?

I'm thinking it's the wet sleeve version. The newer ones start with 426-

Call Ken Black with the serial # and he can tell you exactly what it is.

Thanks, guys. I know what it is. Just wondering about more info. Here are some pics. I didn't know if he does anything differently with the newer castings. Like upgraded or new versions. Thanks. I already know it's a .030 over wetblock. Stock specs everywhere else, I believe. I have the latest freshening up paperwork from KB, but it was done in 2001. Wondering how old the block is.

Wow, just spoke to them. It's an original race block converted by KB to a water block. It is a Stage 6 Race Block. He told me I need to make sure my Stage 5 Heads steam holes align perfectly with the blocks 10 holes. Awesome. Eyeballing , they look good. My builder will make sure, I'm sure.

With the cross bars from bank to bank in the lifter galley, and apparent standard cam location, it would seem to be a Stage I block. If you'll be using a roller camshaft, make sure you have lifter pairs that will separate from each other for installation. Verify the lifter bank angle is 45 degrees. Be sure to check for cam bearing alignment, and deck height, also. Regards, Chase

Stage I is very early. That serial number is nowhere near that.

That valley area looks very much like mine. My block is # 1343 and is a Stage 3.

Mine is an old Connie Calitta Fuel block that was passed down to the T/A ranks from the 90's. The valley cross braces are not as wide on mine. If I remember correctly it is a Stage 8.

This is the best photo I have of the lifter valley.

Since the cross braces have some machining near the lifter bores, hopefully the roller lifter link bars clear the cross brace for easier installation. Unlike the older stage blocks shown in this post.

I wonder if a Mopar mini starter will clear the ribs in that area? I ordered my new block with "starter clearancing", but I don't know if it is needed with a mini-starter.

All of the silicone is from KB engines from water pressure testing.

And from that picture of the main studs,
I see a difference. The newer blocks (426-) have 5/8" studs in the block, tapered to 9/16" through the caps. With the optional double side bolts (4 side bolts per cap).
