Good morning everyone...

A few weeks ago I posted a question about the correct decklid emblem for a 69 Road Runner. My issue was whether some cars had "Plymouth" on the RH side of the decklid, or if all of them had "road runner". The answer I got was that all of them had "road runner". My car has "road runner" and most of the cars I have seen do as well, but I ran across an old Road Runner at a body shop (picture attached) that had "Plymouth" instead of "road runner".

As you can see, the paint on this car is ancient, and judging by the door and decklid decals, I judge this to be original paint. I don't think this car has been messed with. It's a 383 air grabber car. It doesn't have the data plate on the fender, but its dash VIN is "RM21H9G*****).

My thought is that perhaps early or late build date cars may have had "Plymouth". Or perhaps certain factories. Or maybe someone just ran out of "road runner" emblems. I don't know, but it's interesting.

Any thoughts?

as far as I've ever seen it was Plymouth on the hood and Road Runner on the deck.

My mid June build 69 has original paint. Roadrunner on the trunk, plymouth on the hood.

The car may have been rear ended early in its life and the body shop put a used trunk lid from a Satty on it then painted the entire car. I worked at three different body shops back in the 1970's and 1980's and if we knew we were going to have a hard time matching the color we would paint the entire car. I remember a 1976 Cutlass that was hit on the drivers side and the customer said that unless the paint matched perfectly he would not sign the insurance check, so we painted the entire car. He was amazed at how well the "new" paint matched the old!!!

I've never - not once - since those cars were new, seen an original '69 Road Runner that said "Plymouth" on its trunk lid. That's probably thousands by now, haha, but it's possibly a factory error if it could be proven that it's the car's original factory-installed trunk lid...never say never, as the saying goes.
I'd say someone installed a Belvedere trunk lid on that car; could have even been a dealer, to repair transport/lot damage.

There is really nothing confusing about it. It's just an incorrect name plate on the deck lid.

The RM21 is correct for a Roadrunner Coupe.
It could be a Belvedere deck lid.
I had to use a Belvedere deck lid while restoring my 69 Plymouth Roadrunner. It had a "PLYMOUTH" emblem on it that had to be filled and re-drilled for the correct "road runner" emblems.

Did the cars that were imported for Europe, Australia, and even Canada have that decklid? Doubt it...but that's all I can think of.

Odds are that it was a replacement from another B-body Plymouth.

You all are probably right. I just thought it was interesting. Now I have to find a way to talk the guy into selling me that car...
