1969 RR I want to bypass the dash gauge for my amps. I wish to hook up a separate volt meter under the dash. What are the proper steps in doing so. Eventually I want to hook up electric pusher fans to supplement the mechanical fan. Just want to do this right to prevent a fire!

A lot of folks do the mad bypass. I also run a hot wire from the alt to the starter relay post. I also have a relay kit on my headlights and would do the same if your doing electric fans. Might consider an alt upgrade too.

Wise move. Many of us have done the same thing and there are almost more benefits than I can even list. This was the "blueprint" I put together for my planning. I assembled a relay box under the battery and I ran a bypass wire from the ALT to the battery stud on the starter relay. I left my Ammeter connected since the bypass (with the relays) reduced the load across the two studs to nearly nothing.

One important thing to add is soldering the connections. If you read the Mad guide, Mark stresses the use of solder. On ANY of these high-amp electrical connections you want to clean, crimp, solder then seal. If you do that, the connections will last many years and they will stay cool. Use crimp connectors that are not insulated and then solder them and shrink tube them.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into the kit.

Relay box is cheap to make and hides quite well.

Voltmeter is simple. Keyed hot to one side and ground the other terminal.

Before using an electric fan if really required.....
U better upgrade the entire electrical system, starting with the alternator, voltage regulator and bulkhead connections...

Depending upon what year Mopar, many OE alternators were rated @ < 50 Amps.. An electric fan system can easily draw up to 50/60 Amps leaving no reserve capacity for headlites, stereo, subwoofer, MSD box, fuel pump and/or other accessories..

What many guys don't grasp is that the electrical system has to be thought thoroughly through from start to finish..
For example..
Adding relays for headlites is really only part of the job..
If the rest of the electrical system is not gone through, after 35-45 years the Mopar OE connectors, sockets, grounds.
Need to be taken apart..
Kleened & coated with dialectric grease and replaced if necessary.

Just my $0.03...
