Dave, I took a couple of extra lifters and shimmed them solid. Then, I picked up a couple of checker pushrods from Trend. It's a bit of a pain as you have to install the lifters, then torque the head with the head gasket, then mount the rockers, then adjust the pushrod, then remove everything.
I like using Trend Pushrods as they have a great selection of stocked sizes/lengths. Once I have the pushrod measurement from the checker pushrod, I see how close they are to the stocking sizes with about .050" preload added to the measured pushrod dim, and pick from there. On my current engine, based on Trend stocked lengths, I think it worked out that I have about .040" preload. But that's how I do it.

Stock length should be fine. Went through this awhile back with a Gen 3 build. Plenty of room left in the lifter/plunger travel for your application.
If you like drag racing, support your local track.

Steve what did you end up with for push rods diam and wall thickness?

I was going to try to stuff 3/8 dia. pushrods but I would have had to copper tubes sleeve the holes in the head as when I tried to clearance them a little bit, I was starting to break thru the port. I ended up going with 5/16 x .083 wall. Can't remember the exact lengths. I can tell you lengths when I get home from work.
Stock 5/16 pushrods are .06"-.065" wall if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the info I was just wondering what wall thickness and diam I was thinking about a 3/8 as well. What spring pressures are you running?
