I use a black epoxy, then a double coat... comes out very smooth this way if you do it in the right conditions and the right laquer thinner.

Not something I'd do,...but if I did, I'd use the a pair of the same decals (mfg'd) for "masking" as the ones that replace the painted decals, as some mfg's trimming/die cutting of decals is shaped differently, plus I'd put down a black base before "masking" with the decal, because if the decal "shrinks" over time, body color, or whatever base your using might show around the edges?...
