Hey gang..
Did a search on some troubleshooting for my MSD utilizing my Chrysler electronic distributor as the trigger. Yesterday I removed the distributor to put the light springs I purchased. Ever since I fired up the Hemi for the 1st time 2 weeks ago, the motor has started up fine. Then, yesterday, no-go. All I did was change out the springs. I've taken apart distributors before, so that isn't my 1st rodeo. With IGN2 on, I do have power to both sides of my ballast resistor ( there is a straight wire by-pass now, not the resistor ). I do have power to the +-side of the coil. With IGN2 on, I take the male end of the two-prong distributor lead (harness-side) and touch it to ground. I get no spark from the coil wire ( distributor cap end ). If I recall correctly? Isn't this the troubleshooting procedure to see whether the distributor pick-up inside is bad?

I don't think I have an MSD problem......

Thanks in advance....

Yes on a regular setup you'd ground that male terminal repeatedly which'd tell you if the rest of the system (other than pickup/dist) is OK but I ain't sure how MSD operates other than the end result of multiple sparks. The problem did start after the dist work so I would go thru it again but it just might be Murphys law. Here's a BTT for ya

Check the pickup with a ohm meter, if it is above 500 ohms( I think) replace the pickup If it is good get another MSD box A freind and customer had a MSD6 box die when his steering colum coupler ripped two ,#5&7#, spark plug wires off, the coil would fire when grounding the white wire but not do anything else, it is possible that one of the spark plug wires fired into the 12V feed to the MSD box It's all electronics, no magic

I am checking...... The coil is extremely hot to the touch.... I did the troubleshooting process outlined in the MSD installation guide. I jumped the two leads going to the distributor from the MSD with IGN2 on and nothing. The coil is real hot. At the 200 setting on my ohms reader, I am measuring 1.5.....

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, electronics....

Update....

I swapped out the coil for the "Flame Thrower" Pertronix coil I have on the C500 and I do get spark jumping the trigger leads as outline in the MSD troubleshooting guide.. I got spark and when I hooked it all together, my 426 fired up.......... Now, I'll put back the distributor I had in there before with the light advance curve springs. The distributor is probably just fine....

I put the Blaster on the C500 and it started up without a hitch...... So, now I'm scratching my head on what the problem was... I put the MSD Blaster back on the 426 and she fired right up........ Lordy !!!

So, I took that as a cue. I reinstalled the electronic I had with the light springs back in the motor. Had Jacob fire it up and set the total degree advance to 32 for starters.. Man, that motor with the open headers sounds like a BEAST !!!! Something about a 2nd Generation HEMI that makes the sound so much louder and meaner than any other motor, guess its the efficiency of those heads.....
I should be getting the QTP electric dumps soon and off to the exhaust shop. I am hoping Friday I can do that........

Just a word to the wise...
Send those QTPs back as they will start to leak badly...
Get the ones by Doug's, available from Summit or Jegs....

I appreciate everyone's input. I have a real good friend with a 426 Hemi in his 69 Charger with the QTP's and he's never had any issues.... I'm just going on personal first hand experience. I'll hold QTP to any warranty issues if they creep up...

Duh...
No biggee..
Its your call...
If U compare the Dougs the way the open/close gate works to the way the butterflys work on the QTPs U can easily see their design flaw. Note as the QTPs butterflys carbon up they will not seal and can leak, as the sliding gate on the Dougs kleens itself when operated....

Just my $0.03...

I will second this. Everything else will leak over time and the shafts will strip out. QTP refused to warranty my cutouts because they were "too close to the collector" even though their warranty said nothing about mounting location. While the Doug's are expensive, they are worth every penny.

Yup..
There are multiple quality issues with QTPs...
Their motors are less robust and can fail, and the butterfly flap plate is too thin.. The biggest issue with QTPs is that when a problem arises they just blow it off.. They quote a 4 year warranty but to me its worthless if they don't back it up with a replacement product.

We have installed both and actually have had some Dougs which are now over 5 years old. The only issue we have had with the Dougs is their Chinese made toggle switch can burn out, so now we change over to an industrial grade USA made DPDT toggle switch no more issues.

We agree the Dougs may cost more but as Pappy always said the lowest price is not always the best deal..

Just my $0.03...
