I've got a fairly stock 440 on the dyno and will be making some pulls on it tomorrow. The motor is a numbers matching 70' 440 magnum out of a friends 70' Cuda. I built the motor about 20 years ago and it's got maybe 30 minutes run time on it. It never got in the car but will be going in FINALLY after it gets off the dyno. The motor is .030 over with KB hypereutectic KB 184's. Quench is set at .045, stock heads with 2.08/1.74 valves, pocket ported, and port matched. Stock '70 440 intake with heat and stock carb. Compression is 8.9-1, cam is the MP Hemi grind .474 lift, degreed in at 106. Stock 6 qt. pan with tray, I'll be running it with 1-3/4" long tube headers with 3" collectors, electric water pump drive, MP electronic distributer. What are your guesses?? Dave

I've got a Torquer II and an M1 single plane sitting around along with lots of better carbs but he wants the stock look so that's what it's going to run. If I had the stock down pipes I'd pull it with the stock exhaust manifolds. Dave
Get a Holley Street Dominator over those two, or the RPM.

Had a few issues with the motor as it had sat 5-6 years but I got a couple clean pulls in. It was picking up every pull. On 110 octane and 38 degrees timing it made 386.3hp@4800 and 495.8ftlbs@3314rpm. Stock iron intake with heat and stock 750 AVS. hp peak was at 13.62/1 a/f and best torque was at 13.99 a/f. I jetted it up so it was in the mid 12's and it lost hp and torque. The motor only was drawing 639cfm@5876rpm. Was going to switch to 91 octane and pick up some more power but on the last pull on 110 my water transfer pump went to the happy hunting grounds. I'll try and pick one up tonite at wallyworld and finish the motor tomorrow. I'm planning on making some pulls with the motor running the waterpump, fan, and alternator, also will install the factory aircleaner assembly. That should kill 20-25hp. Power and torque flatten out and hang in pretty well right up to 5800 where I ended the pulls.Dave

A friend gave me a dyno mule to play with last year. 426 wedge unknown compression ratio, comp cams .525 solid, Torquer II intake. Anyway in his son's 3800lb RR it ran 12.80's. It made a bit less power and torque than the 440 that's on the dyno now. My little 318 turbo motor picked up 6hp@12lbs of boost going from 110 to 87 octane. Dave

Ron, you nailed it at 390 Hey, I didnt know he was going to use 110 fuel.
With 91 fuel, I expect I will nail it too at 400

I always start a dyno pull on 110 or better. I learned early on to start with more octane than you need.Dave

Well after 2 hard days in the garage on the dyno the motor is finished off the dyno loaded up and on it's way home. Switching to the fuel he brought with him didn't alter the peak hp and torque figures, I suspect it was better than 91-92. Being it was going back into a resto he wanted everything to look correct so we stayed with all the factory hardware. He brought a factory dual snorkel aircleaner so I made a pull with it in place with a factory replacement airfilter. These things are TERRIBLE, the motor dropped to 362.9hp@4952rpm and 442.8ftlbs@3336. The A/F ratio which was set at max power went rich as it just couldn't suck enough air through the 2 snorkles. HP peak was 13.09a/f and peak torque was at 12.30 a/f. I always wondered how much the old trick of flipping the air cleaner lid helped or hurt so that was the next pull. SHAZAMM! Nite and day difference, 380.9hp@5119rpm and 472.3ftlbs@3684. A/F at peak hp was13.18 and 13.08 at peak torque. Last pull was with aircleaner in place, lid on correctly, engine driving the water pump, alt., and stock engine fan in place. Things didn't go so well, at around 4000rpm the 20 year old new factory water pump dis-assembled itself, (housing is in 3 pieces). Lucky for me and all the electrical wires and connections, the carnage was contained inside the waterpump pulley and the fan didn't hit anything other than the lower crank pulley. I had a real hard time not trying some other manifolds, spacers, and carbs but I'll be playing with a 426 wedge in the coming weeks. I'm going to throw everything at that mule. Dave l

Sounds very similar to,a combo I had about 10 years ago.
I too noticed a huge difference between the dual snorkel air cleaner wnd the open element. Car did NOT like the dual snorkel and I was shocked how much it slowed down.
Mine was 9.5:1 CR, 452 heads, 71 bottom end and 71 4 bbl. intake with a 750 vacuum secondary with Walker headers. Ran 104mph in a 3600 lbs. car with 3.23 gears.

Shazamm, Good to see the air cleaner flip lid test. We all did it back in the day, 70,s early 80,s. Even if it might not give more HP, in all cases, it sure sounded cool and felt alot faster. Back then some said it didnt improve HP at all, I knew better. Thanks for that "Shazamm" test.
