Looking at a '92 Jeep Wrangler it has a 4cyl 5spd. What kind of reputation does the 4cyl have in terms of longevity and/or reliability? Any other problem areas to look at?

My 2001 ran like a top for 10years and then I sold it....no issues and hopefully is still running strong....not sure if a earlier model is apples to apples...????

the 4 cylinder is known as the engine you wish you never bought, and had just waited to find the 6 cylinder.

You may already know this, but the wranglers have a rust problem in the rear kick up area of the frame. Look it over real good, I have seen some Florida ones rusted out.

My buddy had a 4cyl/5spd, after he put 31s on it most of his time was in 4th, so he regeared to (I think)456, and then went up to 32's, and it worked good.

I had a '93 4.0/5spd, and just going up to 30-9.50s cut the power noticeably, but the 4.0 had enough power to deal with it.

Like has been said, I think when you get the 4, you will wish you had found a 6.

All depends on what you plan on using it for, just puttering around in the woods, the 4 will work fine.

Bigger tires, highway driving, you will want the 6.

It takes gasoline to interest me.

Thanks for the replies, it's for my wife. We have a '99 Cherokee with the 4.0 in it. She wants a Wrangler, I found a '92 for $1500.00 It's probalby safe to assume that it's not cost effective to swap a 4.0 into a Wrangler? Cheaper/easier to just buy one with the 4.0?
