I`m looking at 1/2 or preferably 3/4 ton but no 1 tons or Cummins so I guess my main concern for driveabilty would be the fulltime 4wd system. What exactly is the problem with the fulltime units and how hard it is to change over to a newer transfer case? Like I said 95% of my driving with it is local but I may do an occasional long haul to Lebanon Valley or even Carlisle which is 900 mile sround trip?

89 was the first year for a Cummins and the 89 to 91.5's had a non lockup 727 for an automatic with a 3.07 gear. Which means they had Dana 61 and 71 diffs. 91.5 to 93 had a non lockup 518 for the auto and 3.54 gears. The manuals from 89 to 93 all had the Getrag 360 5 speed with either 3.54s or 4.10s.

You need a front differential, a transfer case+linkage, then either a different transmission or at least the output shaft and tail section from a newer one. to swap over from full time. After that its just getting the driveshafts the right length. It's actually pretty easy if you have the parts, I've done it on a few trucks.
Someone please define full-time transfer case for me...???? I know my 73 W100's transfer case had 2-Hi, N, 4-Hi, 4-Low and factory lock-out hubs....to me this would not be considered full time...???? I purchased this truck brand new in 1973 .... scratches head

I have a 74 W-100 ClubCab SWB and it is a divorced transfer case part-time 4x4. AFAIK all 73-74 W-100s were divorced xfer case. Have a short tailshaft 727 and a short driveshaft back to the transfer case (NP205). They also have manual locker hubs on the front Dana 44. 5x5.5 bolt pattern wheels. And a rear 8 3/4 axle. Bryce

Is an 80-84 front disc brake axle a bolt in for a 72-74 truck? I suppose you may have to swap master cylinders.

Yours is a part time. The full time had a NP203 t-case and was always in 4wd, you could not unlock the front hubs as they spun all the time. Hiloc-Hi-N-Lo-Loloc. It had a chain in the T=case that wore out, small front wheel bearings that were ugly to change. Others may have different opinions but that is my thought on them. Your 73 is a tough truck too, it just has drums on the front rather than the discs on the 80 and up part timers. I really like the 72-80 body style so the 80 is a bit of a holy grail to me with it's great styling and Part time 4WD system. Nothing wrong with the 81 and up trucks either of course but I just like the early body styling more.
Sheldon
Thanks for the clarification Sheldon.....that 73 was a great truck....had it for over 10 years and never once gave me a problem....and it got worked hard

Yes other then the correct master cylinder it's a bolt in affair. Dodge didn't change very many dimensions until 94.

So which years have the fulltime 4wd, I see the `77 military trucks have it?
Full-Time 4WD NP203 Transfer Case rigs.... 1975-1979 all dodge truck models 100-400 1974-1979 ramcharger and trailduster
1972-74 trucks used NP205 gear driven t-case which was remotely mounted(divorced), and front axles used drum brakes
1980-1993...100 thru 300 with the Dana 44 front axle used the Aluminum NP208 or NP241 transfer case, and in 1985 went to CAD axle 1980-1993 200 and 300 series with the Dana 60 Front axle used the NP205 transfer case.
All 1975-1993 had Disc Brakes
Dinuba, California, Home of the PALOMINO ranch and 440 truck farm, where dodge trucks have a home. Have Four 1979 dodge PALOMINO trucks now.

As long as gear ratio is the same. They bolt in a little diff but will swap. You can also swap just the knuckles out from any 80-93 and install it on the 72-74 axle

The heater fan and the running lights fuses both melted in my 92 along with the ignition and headlight switches. Several problems Dodge never fixed for 22 years.

Chevy disc is a real conversation on the 72-74 4x4. 72-74 D100 had disc.
