Well, what type of disc brakes did you take off the 73 car? Factory original brakes, or some type of conversion, aftermarket, or something other from stock? Yes, factory 73-76 A body cars used the big ball joint, along with 99% of the drum brake cars, built in 1973. There are some 73's out there that have 9 inch drum brakes on them. Those few cars that survive, have small ball joint upper control arms. All A body cars 72, on down, use small ball joint upper control arms. Hope that helps you out.

im using the ones off of the 73 i thought the small ball joint control arm wouldn't fit in the disc brake spindle.

A 1973 disc brake car would have the large ball joints. What you have must be something different. Post a picture and we can tell you what parts you have.
could somebody have switched the upper control arms with some that have the small ball joints

It'll "fit", as in the stud will go into the hole in the spindle. But the ball joint stud is too small. Dr. Diff sells a tapered adapter to make them work though.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

There's the 2 sizes of A body UBJ's & assuming the parts house gave you the larger A body ones as opposed to C ? body ones that are even bigger yet and assuming you have the BBP single piston discs which you should have since you said they were on a '73 (if original) then you will need those larger ball joints that you have now to match the larger spindle taper & you would need to locate a set of the 73-76 UCA's which would use that larger ball joint. But as said we're still missing something- Are these KH SBP 65-72 discs that were on this 1973 340 duster? Or Doc I think sells a spacer to use the small UBJ/it's matching UCA with the 73 up spindles which have a larger dia tapered hole which is another possibility that could have already taken place in the ones you pirated. Pics please! (or more info)

i used the socket that i used on my 70 plymouth gtx with drum brakes i thought it would have had the big ball joint in it but it wont fit the ball joints that the parts house gave me for the 73 duster im wondering if they gave me the bigger ones or does my gtx have small ball joints.

GTX's DO NOT use small ball joints. What brand ball joints did you get at your parts store? What's the part number on the box? Someone here, most likely can reference the part number. An incorrectly packaged part, perhaps.
