A while back I put up a post about timing lights...I have an MSD Digital with a Tach readout...On the reference of some other members here, I was told to buy a simple analog scope, without a dial. I went ahead and bought the Flaming River FR1001 for $60 on Amazon. I got around to firing up with Roadrunner today and decided to check the timing with my new toy. I took it out of the blister pack when it arrived and its been in a diagnostic case with other tools for about 2 months. I put the pickup on the #1 and check the timing...12º Initial....hey...wait...what happen...where'd the strobe go.....the red LED turns on ..on the top of the scope when I push the timing button....the flashlight feature turns on.

This is the fastest tool that has ever failed in my hands...I got 30 seconds of use out of it. At least my Digital Snap-On gave me six years of use before it gave up...

What a crock!...Now I have to deal with RMA's and shipping...and I live all the way in Greece...It's gonna cost more to ship it wherever Flaming River is than the price of the actual scope

have you checked it on a non-cd ignition car?

I have the same one still in the package. Bought it to time magneto equipped Harleys. Are they really that bad? I use an old craftsmen on my car, still works after 30 years.

i rmember the thread. i would test it on the Malibu to see if it even works at all. if it's no dice on the Malibu maybe it's something you're not doing or it IS bad... at least you'd know

it's good to see you have a sense of humor about both threads! doesn't it seem odd to you that BOTH the tach and the new light don't work?? not sure what could be wrong but in the middle is the MSD.

Eh...if we don't have humor we are all doomed....I think this car....doesn't want her pacemaker adjusted...meanwhile...I can't adjust the pacemaker on my Charger now....and I am ticked off about it

Naw...My Charger is golden...6AL from 2001 along with a spare brand new in the box in case something happens (Not this Digital stuff they are selling now...which means more Chinese electronics)...I just wanted to set up my Summer driving variables because its a scorcher already. Tach is fully functional in my car right off the Tach Output of the 6AL

Dare I ask.....how good is the MSD 8992 Timing Light? $160...I need something I can depend on....and that will last a decade with sporadic use

That's the one you want, worth 160 bucks. The best available.

I own them all and have tried them all. The flaming river is a inexpensive light where you could afford to have one in each glove compartment of each car or something. It works, just not real bright especially during the day outside. Good when no 12 volts is handy. We used 7AH 12V gell cell to power our timing light for the dragster.

The blue one in my picture is the MSD unit, I got mine from French Grimes, the magneto guy. It's a simple, rugged, the best and works great with any ignition including 44 amp MSD mags on my top alcohol dragster. The blue one in my picture was used full time racing for 12 years. Never missed a beat and one just like it was used by every top crew chief with the guys I raced with. It is super bright and crisp.

I'd suggest to check the clamp that goes around the spark plug wire on the flaming river and make sure it was seated. It's a cheaper clamp than the one on the MSD light.

The blue timing light is like twice as bright as the craftsman lights and very focused. It's not adjustable, the MSD. So when I'm messing with street motors I use the dial back craftsman timing light.

I have the FR same as you and also that Craftsman just to the right of it...but the dial back doesn't work so well. I even found the Sun 7501...new in the box an hour ago with a receipt from 1986 in the Box from Trak Auto for $42...never been used....but there is no way that can be used on the MSD either

I've seen some problems on this board about this MSD setup lately. Is it really that much of a pain in the a$$ that you need special tuning tools? And adapters for tach's? What advantage does it give you?

::sigh::

Just got off the phone with Flaming River. I was cordial in the beginning and he told me he doesn't sell parts for it, that they come in that way. So instantly I think...great...it's not even designed by Flaming River, they just buy it from a Widget gallery in China and put their name on it. Odd because the site clearly states they sell Xenon bulbs for this model HERE!

I explained to him I had a SnapOn light prior to this and people swore by this very model that they have a decade of use on it AND its still going. I get 30 seconds and POOF!

He tells me to send it in with an RMA # and they will see if they can fix it. I asked "If?!?!" he said yes because they dont have parts. I asked him what if they cant fix it...he said "well then we would send it back to you and you would have to look into replacing it" .....NICE!!! (sarcasm) ..."YOU have to look into replacing it"

Way to stand by a product...this is what I get for trying to support the American worker...I should have gone with my gut and bought the English GunSon...

Yeah, stuff like that makes my blood boil. Sounds like a sending it back is a waste of your time and money. So I guess you have as many (or more) resources to fix this thing as they do. You might as well open it up and see if maybe it's a loose connection (unless you're certain it's the bulb). Good luck, Pyper. Keep us posted...
