I am rebuilding an A500 from a 1989 dakota.

It looks to have been rebuild back in 2004.

I had a leak form the converter, thats the reason why I pulled the transmission. It seemed to operate properly but I havent driven the truck but less than 200 miles.

The input shaft thrust was out of speck at .o95"

Because of this I opened it up and found the thrust washers worn into the copper. There was also some broken snap rings in the over drive.

My question is it ok to double up the fiber thrust washers that are located in the front and rear clutches pack areas?

When I diss assembled the transmission there was only a pair of fiber thrust washers, and the input thrust clearance was .095".

When I reassembled and checked the thrust I got .145", this was with a pair of .065" fiber shim washers in place. So I added another .065 shim to the existing .065" shim between front and rear clutch packs. Then I got a thrust check of .080", this is within speck but seemed quite sloppy. So I added a .050" shim to the existing .065" shim behind the pump. Now my thrust is .030"

Another question:

Am I missing something?

Any advice?

Thanks

Between the input shaft and the intermediate shaft there is a selective thickness thrust washer and a thin steel thrust plate (fits on the pilot hub of the intermediate shaft), the thrust plate often gets omitted when the trans is reassembled. If the thrust plate is missing it will account for your loose end play, if the plate is there and you have the thinnest selective washer you can lose about .020" with the thickest washer.

Thanks John for the reply, I know you know a thing or two.

The select a thickness shim is new and the thin cap is in good shape and both are installed.

I replaced the thrust washers in the planetary gear set. It feels/operates by hand fine.

When checking the thrust all the extra movement is in the clutch packs. I have the transmission vertical with the valve body still out.

I'm gonna Run it with the double set of fiber shims in the clutch packs. Wish me luck.
