I am building a 318 for my 72 Power Wagon short bed truck. I will be running 35" tires and 4.56 gears, and the NP 435 4 spd. trans. Heres is my current build so far, the shortblock-

1971 318 block bored .030" over
stock crank polished and balanced
340 floating rods
340 windage tray
Federal Mogul STL-285NP30 pistons, sitting at zero deck.
Crane powermax .454"/.480 lift cam.

I need help picking what heads and intake I should use? Thanks for any suggestions!

I have a set of #587 340/350 heads w/ 1.88 intake valves and gasket-match porting, these a freshly rebuilt with a 3-angle valve job. And I have a stock set of 318 #302 casting heads that need rebuilt.

my suggestion sell the 587's, rebuild & use the 302's with a head gasket to get you .035-.040" quench.

I'd go with 302 heads for the torque over the 360 heads. Since it is in a truck, you'll want more grunt than high rpm. Dual plane or even a performer intake for some low end.

I'd use a set of EQ Magnums, or the 302s.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

#302 heads with 188/160 valves with the bowls cleaned up

used a couple sets this way with a home clean up of the bowls

used a set on my 360 in the 4x4 also, lots of low end, runs out of steam about 5500 rpms though

1.92/1.60 valves, 340/360 port size, and 63cc closed chambers.

By the time you add 1.88 valves and hog out a set of 302s the money could have been spent on Mags.
