Did anybody ask for a Hemi?  Engineering exercises come up with great new ideas, sometimes. Other times well, not so much. They were right to patent it though whether they actually use it or not.

I would like a tailgate/rear bumper design that mounts the spare tire in some new innovative way. Ideally a new design that replaces 90% of the weight of rear bumper and lets the horizontally mounted tire absorb low speed bumps. I still want an unimpeded Class 4 trailer hitch mount I want the spare tire easy to get at but still theft secure as practical. I want some aero improvement as a bonus Let those engineers spend free time designing specs for the wants listed above, and make it look good too. On second thought, make the rear look mean and menancing so that cars wont tailgate too close to the rear of the pickup....

As for the side-opening tailgate, I can't think of a single use for it.
If the tailgate opens to the side and not down, then you wouldn't have to put heavy objects on the tailgate and then push them onto the bed in order to close the tailgate (I've done this exact procedure on the farm too many times to count). Many times I would take the tailgate OFF the truck, load up heavy items, put the tailgate back on and close it, and reverse to unload. With this, I could see loading and unloading without removing the tailgate at all...
Not a bad idea, IMHO...

the tailgate gives you a "table" to put that heavy stuff on, before you work it into the bed. those novelty tailgates have been around for decades. there's a reason real trucks don't have them.  for those of you needing to pack parasols, persian rugs, balsa wood scraps, and groceries, i'm sure it will be dandy. i prefer my bench/table/desk/platform tailgate. maybe ram will patent prescription windshields next, so we don't need to wear glasses, while driving!!!

"Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread" The tailgate up or down for aerodynamics threads sometimes never end, but..... I seem to remember a group of car magazine writers who were determined to win a Honda Insight cross country MPG challenge contest years ago. They ended up doing the crazy (and potentially dangerous) trick of propping open the two side doors of a Suburban and having the Honda Insight drive right on the Suburban's rear bumper to "draft" to 70 MPG levels to inflate the readout on the Insight's trip computer. So if a pickup's two tailgate doors opened sideways, would leaving them open improve MPG ? If it allowed the "trapped horizontal whirlwind" to disappear from behind the cab rear window, probably not. But 18 wheel trucks are now using "TrailerTail" extensions that have been proven to improve aero http://atdynamics.com/rolltail.htm
